Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, Ky. - Some bounces finally started going the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) way on Saturday night against the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds). Two errors and a home run from Alexander Simon helped lead the Hot Rods to a 6-3 victory over the Dragons.
Bowling Green struck first with the help of a Dayton error in the third. Willy Adames led off with a single, and he would later advance to second on a walk. Adames was moving to third on a groundball hit by Oscar Hernandez, but second baseman Ronald Bueno overthrew the bag at first base and Adames was able to score on the play.
Simon and the Hot Rods needed no help in doubling the lead in the fifth. With two outs, Simon hit a home run that sailed over the bridge in left-center field. It was one of homers hit by a Hot Rod this season, and it doubled the Bowling Green advantage to 2-0.
Dayton would rally to take the lead in the sixth. Bueno led off with a double, and Alex Blandino followed with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt, Phillip Ervin singled to left field to drive home both Bueno and Blandino. Later in the inning, Tanner Rahier put the Dragons in front by plating Ervin with a single of his own.
The lead would not last long, as the Hot Rods scored two to re-gain the advantage in the bottom half of the sixth. Pat Blair led off with a base hit, and moved to second when James Harris walked. After a sacrifice bunt by Spencer Edwards, the Dragons intentionally walked Adames to load the bases. Julian Ridings then hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Blair, and the inning was capped when Oscar Hernandez singled home Harris. The Hot Rods led 4-3 after six innings.
Two more runs crossed thanks to another Dayton error in the seventh. Simon started the rally with a single, and Blair later reached on walk. When Edwards hit a groundball to Blandino at short, it looked as if the rally was finished. However, his throw went wide of the bag, and both Simon and Blair hustled around to score to swell the lead to 6-3, which would prove to be the final score.
Bruedlin Suero (4-3) tossed another quality start, allowing just three runs over six frames while striking out seven to earn the win. Willie Gabay worked a pair of shutout frames, and Brian Miller recorded his second save in as many games.
Dayton reliever Radhames Quezada (1-1) entered the game in the sixth and received the loss.
The Hot Rods can now level the series in the finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on Smucker's Uncrustables Family Sundae, and kids can run the bases after the game with ice cream specials all game long.
