Dayton Dragons News Release
Bowling Green, Ky.-Alex Blandino's two-out, run-scoring single broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the final inning as the Dayton Dragons capped off a three-run rally to defeat the Bowling Green Hot Rods 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night. The Dragons held off a Bowling Green comeback bid to win game two 8-7 and earn their second doubleheader sweep of 2014.
The Dragons improved their second half record to 24-23 with the sweep. They lead the second playoff race by one game over Great Lakes and by one and one-half games over Lake County with 23 games to play.
The Dragons improved their record against Bowling Green in 2014 to 10-1. The Dragons have gone 13-2 in 15 road games since June 26.
In game one, the Dragons trailed 2-0 entering the seventh inning of a scheduled seven-inning game. They opened the inning with back-to-back walks to Jonathan Reynoso and Joe Hudson. Jamodrick McGruder then hit a hard ground ball off the glove of Bowling Green first baseman Alexander Simon that carried into right field as Reynoso scored and pinch runner Nick Benedetto went to third. Jon Matthews grounded to first base as the tying run scored and McGruder was safe at second. Ronald Bueno then singled to right field, but McGruder was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Bueno advanced to second on the throw home. Blandino followed with a line drive up the middle that scored Bueno and gave the Dragons a 3-2 lead.
Dragons closer Alejandro Chacin pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh for the save, his 17th of the year. The victory went to reliever Evan Mitchell (2-3), who pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
In game two, the Dragons built an 8-2 lead before Bowling Green rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 8-7. But Zack Weiss pitched out of a jam in the sixth and Joel Bender worked a perfect seventh inning for the save as the Dragons held on. Pedro Diaz (1-1) got the final two outs in fifth and was credited with the win despite allowing a two-run double in his only inning of work.
Blandino drove in four runs in the doubleheader, going 2 for 4 with two sacrifice flies. Bueno went 4 for 8 with two RBI in the doubleheader.
The Dragons (24-23) battle the Hot Rods (20-27) in the third game of the four-game series on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. EDT. Nick Travieso (10-5, 3.39) will pitch for the Dragons against Bruedlin Suero (3-3, 3.95).
