South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

A homerun into the left field stands on the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth inning was all the South Bend Silver Hawks (67-50) needed to take Saturday night's game at Four Winds Field from the Great Lakes Loons (57-61). Joe Munoz's roundtripper off of Loons' pitcher Michael Johnson was the only run scored by either side. Four Silver Hawks pitchers combined to shutout the Loons, giving up eight hits.

Hawks starter Blake Perry (W, 7-4) got off to a rocky start in the first inning. Perry gave up back-to-back singles to shortstop Brandon Trinkwon and center fielder Malcolm Holland to start the game, but recorded two strikeouts en route to ending the Loons rally. The Great Lakes Loons, Class-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, threatened again in the top of the fifth. First baseman Josmar Cordero led off the frame with a single to center. An offering from Perry then plunked left fielder Jacob Scavuzzo on the brim of his batting helmet to put runners at first and second with one out. After catcher Jose Capellan struck out, Trinkwon walked to load the bases. However, Perry was able to get Holland to fly out to Chuck Taylor in center to keep the Loons of the scoreboard. In total, Perry tossed six scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out three.

The South Bend Silver Hawks, Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, collected their first hit of the game in the fourth when second baseman Jamie Westbrook singled to shallow right. That was the only hit that Loons starter Brandon Martinez gave up over his five innings of work as he walked four while striking out two. It was a different story to start the bottom of the sixth. Johnson (L, 4-3) had barely caught his breath from jogging in from the bullpen before his first offering was deposited over the left field wall. Munoz, the South Bend shortstop, collected Player of the Game honors for blasting the solo homer into the home run porch seats to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Munoz's homer proved to be the difference maker as the Hawks bullpen combined to keep the Loons flightless over the remaining three innings of action. Bud Jeter, Jose Jose and Nick Sarianides all pitched scoreless innings of relief. Sarianides (S, 1) collected his first save of the season as he struck out two Loons to give the Hawks the 1-0 victory.

The Silver Hawks and Loons wrap up the homestand Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Marcus Solbach (2-2, 3.73) will take the mound for South Bend. Scott Barlow (5-5, 4.50) is set to start for Great Lakes.

Sunday is Family Day and Swoop Troop Day at the park. A pregame catch on the field begins at 1:15 p.m. After the game come back down on the field for autographs from the Silver Hawks' players. Get to Four Winds Fields early on Sunday! The first 750 fans through the gates will receive an A.J. Pollock bobblehead. Pollock, currently an outfielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks, played college baseball at the University of Notre Dame, and began his professional baseball career right here, as a member of the 2009 South Bend Silver Hawks. The bobblehead giveaway is presented by Mutual Bank.
