Ziomek, Whitecaps hold off Lugnuts, 3-2

LANSING, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps (30-18, 71-47) held off a late rally by the Lansing Lugnuts (22-26, 53-63) for a 3-2 win on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

After right fielder Wynton Bernard led off the first inning with a double, left fielder Raph Rhymes brought him across to score with an RBI groundout.

An RBI double by second baseman Javier Betancourt extended the lead in the third, and brought across another run with a single in the fifth to stretch the lead to 3-0 against starting pitcher Brad Allen (Loss, 3-5).

After facing the minimum through the first five innings, the Lugnuts broke through against Kevin Ziomek in the sixth. Catcher Chris Schaffer led off the sixth with a double, left fielder David Harris brought him in with single.

Ziomek (Win, 9-6) had eight strikeouts in his six innings, allowing one run on three hits with one walk.

Lansing closed the gap to one in the seventh. First baseman Matt Dean led off the inning with a double, and two batters later, center fielder D.J. Davis brought him in to score with a groundout.

West Michigan reliever Julio Felix (Save, 13) worked three innings, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout.

Lansing lefty Matt Dermody pitched three perfect innings out of the bullpen with one strikeout.

The Lugnuts look to split the series on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium. Right-hander Miguel Castro (0-1, 11.25) makes his second start for Lansing, with righty Chad Green (5-4, 3.47) pitching for West Michigan.
