Silvertips enjoying four-game winning streak

January 26, 2004: The Everett Silvertips are on a roll by winning all three games last week and enjoying a 4-game winning streak. Currently, the Silvertips are 23-17-7-1 with 54 points and 2nd place in the U.S. Division.

The week started with a pivotal game between the Everett Silvertips and the Spokane Chiefs at the Everett Events Center on Wednesday, January 21st. Forward John Dahl started the scoring 26 seconds into the hockey game with a goal and Riley Armstrong added a 2nd period tally as the Everett Silvertips downed the Spokane Chiefs 2-1. Goaltender Jeff Harvey earned #1 star honors as he picked up the victory by making 25 saves. Bryan Nathe and Barry Horman each had assists in the win. The Chiefs outshot the Tips' 26-24 in the hockey game. Both teams went 0 for 4 on the power play.

The Silvertips hit the road for a weekend series against the Prince George Cougars on Friday, January 23rd and Saturday, January 24th at the Prince George Multiplex in Prince George, British Columbia. On Friday, the Tips' and Cougars went into overtime and :18 seconds in the extra session Tips' forward Mark Kress tipped in the overtime game winning goal as the Silvertips down the Cougars 3-2 (OT). Mitch Love added a power play goal and Chad Bassen also added his 12th goal of the season in the victory. Former Cougar netminder now Silvertips goaltender Mike Wall made 31 saves for the win against his former club. Tips' forward Barry Horman and defenseman Bryan Nathe each added 2 assists in the win. Prince George outshot Everett by a margin of 33-28 in the hockey game. The Silvertips went 1 for 4 on the power play and the Cougars went 1 for 3 on the extra man advantage.

Both teams were back in action on Saturday in Prince George and the game became the Mike Wall show as he made 26 saves to pick up his 2nd shutout of the season as the Silvertips shut down the Cougars 3-0. Barry Horman, Marc Desloges and Jeff Schmidt each tallied goals in the victory. Mitch Love, Ryan Blatchford and Bryan Nathe each added assists in the win. Prince George outshot Everett by a margin of 26-13 in the hockey game. Both teams went 0 for 3 on the power play.

LEADING SCORERS

The Silvertips are led in scoring by Chad Bassen (12 goals, 19 assists) and Barry Horman (12 goals, 19 assists) with 31 points. John Dahl (18 goals, 10 assists) leads the Silvertips with 18 goals scored. Chad Bassen and Barry Horman leads the hockey club with 19 assists. Defenseman Mitch Love (7 goals, 10 assists) leads all Silvertips defensemen with 17 points and leads the club with a +10 rating.

TIPS' WITH 2ND BEST WINNING % IN WESTERN CONFERENCE

The Silvertips have the 2nd best winning percentage in the Western Conference with a .563 winning percentage. The Kelowna Rockets have the best winning percentage in the Western Conference and the entire WHL with a .731 winning percentage.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Silvertips are currently 19th in the Western Hockey League on the power play (37 for 277, 13.4%) and 2nd in the WHL on the penalty kill (180 for 204, 88.2%).

SILVERTIPS NETMINDER STILL AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS

Goaltender Jeff Harvey is currently 2nd among WHL goaltenders with a 2.03 goals against, 2nd with a .924 save percentage, tied for 7th with 17 victories and tied for 4th with 3 shutouts.

THE SILVERTIPS AND THE COMMUNITY

The Everett Silvertips will be busy going out into the community the next few weeks. The Silvertips school tour continues with visits to Sunnyside Elementary, Whittier Elementary, Garfield Elementary and Arlington High School. Last week, Mitch Love, Jeff Harvey and John Dahl visited Jackson Elementary. Silvertips defenseman Mitch Love explains, "I think it is very important to get out in the community especially for a new team in the WHL and in a new city. I remember when I was a little kid and a player from the WHL came to visit the school and sign an autograph, it was a wonderful experience and I feel the same way when I do the same for the kids. The city of Everett has given so much support in the first four months of the season and I feel it is important to give back to the community of Everett."

UPCOMING SCHEDULE FOR THE TIPS'

The Silvertips will play 3 games this week. On Wednesday, January 28th the I-5 rivalry continues when the Seattle Thunderbirds come to the Everett Events Center. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. The Silvertips will hit the road on Friday, January 30th when they travel to Portland, Oregon to face off with U.S. Division rivals the Portland Winter Hawks at The Rose Garden. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. The Tips' will be back at the Everett Events Center on Saturday, January 31st when the Kamloops Blazers skate into town. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
