Vancouver Giants News Release

After having lost 10 straight games, the Giants rallied back to win 3 games in 3 nights this past weekend in Western Hockey League action.

Friday night, Mitch Bartley and Gilbert Brule scored goals late in the 3rd period to defeat the Kamloops Blazers 2-1 at Sport Mart Place. It was the final game of the year between the two teams and the only victory for the Giants in Kamloops this season.

Saturday on New West Bruins Retro Night in front of more than 8200 fans, the Giants picked up their 1st overtime win of the season by edging out the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 at the Pacific Coliseum. After falling behind 2-0 in the 1st period, Bartley scored 2 goals to force the game to OT before Joe Logan scored his 1st of the season to get the Giants the win.

Sunday night, Adam Courchaine scored a pair of power play goals and Aaron Sorochan made 24 saves for his 3rd shut-out of the season to lead Vancouver to a 4-0 win over the T-Birds in Seattle. Bartley scored the game-winning goal short-handed in the 1st period while Kevin Hayman recorded the other Giants goal. That win has moved Vancouver into a tie for 2nd place in the WHL's B.C. Divison with the Kamloops Blazers.

WHL Player of the Week Honours could be given to one of a number of Giants players based on their performances this weekend. Mitch Bartley had 4 goals, Adam Courchaine had 2 goals and 3 assists, while Aaron Sorochan won all 3 games, allowing just 3 goals against on 84 shots! He also stopped a penalty shot in OT Saturday night!

The Giants (21-18-8-5=55 points) will be on the road Friday January 30 to play the Spokane Chiefs (7:00pm). They will be back at the Pacific Coliseum to entertain the Kooteany Ice Saturday January 31 (7:00pm).
