Silvertips Blow Late Lead, Fall to Calgary in Shootout

November 22, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

CALGARY - Graham Millar earned a goal and an assist but the Calgary Hitmen used a pair of goals, 53 seconds apart in the third period erase a two-goal deficit and skate past the Everett Silvertips, 4-3 in a shootout before 6,751 fans at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday.

The Silvertips ended a four-game, five-day road trip at with a point after Cody Porter's kick save on Carson Stadnyk sealed the game in the third round of a shootout. Remi Laurencelle and Matt Fonteyne each added a goal and Carter Hart made 24 saves.

Calgary won their fourth game in a row, in a battle between defending champions of the U.S. and Central Division.

Laurencelle put the Silvertips ahead on the rush, 1-0 at 4:27 of the first period when he finished a rocket backdoor feed at the left post from Carson Stadnyk. But Carsen Twarynski's third goal tied the game on the power play with 5:07 remaining, a snipe under the crossbar from the right circle.

Millar's tap-in at the right post restored the Silvertips lead, 2-1 at 7:59 when Patrick Bajkov and Mackenzie Dwyer circuited two quick passes to the goal mouth. The Silvertips, getting out danger earlier in the game on Devon Skoleski's double minor, capitalized on a third period power play chance. Fonteyne, stationed at the top of the right circle, took Noah Juulsen's pass and wired a one-timer past Porter for a 3-1 lead at the 7:12 mark.

With momentum in the Silvertips favor, the lead unfortunately evaporated on two quick Calgary strikes. Jordy Stallard hammered a loose puck from the right circle for a 3-2 deficit at 9:31. On the next shift, the Silvertips mishandled the puck and Keegan Kanzig fed Colby Harmsworth, fooling Hart from the left circle for a 3-3 tie.

Both teams maneuvered through a scoreless overtime and Philadelphia Flyers prospect Radel Fazleev buried the shootout's only goal in the second round, before Hart came back with a glove save on Stallard to keep the game alive. Stadnyk's bid to extend the shootout fell short when he dangled swiftly to his forehand, but Porter read the move with his right pad.
