Chiefs Score Three in the Second Period to Beat Warriors

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs scored three goals in the second period and withstood a late third period push by the Moose Jaw Warriors to preserve a 5-2 win at Spokane Arena on Saturday night. Adam Helewka led the Chiefs with two goals.

After a mostly back-and-forth opening period, the Chiefs struck first with under a minute left as defenseman Evan Fiala scored his third goal of the season to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Off assists from Curtis Miske and Ethan McIndoe, Fiala's slap shot from the point beat starting goaltender Zack Sawchenko through the legs.

The Chiefs began a very strong second period with a goal from rookie forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan at the 3:49 mark. Anderson-Dolan took a breakout pass from Jacob Cardiff down the right wing before snapping a wrister to the far post from the right circle.

Helewka scored his first of the night while the Chiefs were shorthanded, taking the puck coast-to-coast and scoring on a wrap-around to finish the highlight reel sequence. The unassisted goal came with 6:56 left in the middle frame.

Helewka added his second of the night and ninth of the season four minutes later, this time on a 5-on-3 power play. Captain Jason Fram fired a shot from between the circles and Helewka deflected the puck inside the right post to give the Chiefs a 4-0 lead.

Moose Jaw gave the Chiefs a run at a comeback in the third period as Noah Gregor scored his 11th of the season off assists from the WHL's 4th-leading scorer Dryden Hunt and defenseman Tanner Faith. Tanner is the older brother of Chiefs' blueliner Jeff Faith.

The Warriors narrowed the lead to two with a power play score by Josh Brook at the 14:20 mark of the third, off assists from Detroit Red Wings prospect Marc McNulty and forward Brett Howden.

Spokane tightened up after that, eliminating space before an empty net tally by Markson Bechtold sealed the deal at a 5-2 margin.

Tyson Verhelst started in goal for Spokane and stopped 22 of 24 shots faced. Moose Jaw started Sawchenko but made multiple changes throughout the game. Sawchenko made 16 saves on 18 shots in 24:26 on the ice while replacement Brody Willms allowed two goals on 10 shots in 34:25. Willms earned the loss.

Both teams were 1 for 4 on the power play with the Chiefs adding a shorthanded goal.
