Cougars Take out Tigers 5-2
November 22, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- The Medicine Hat Tigers came into Saturday's game on a high after beating the Everett Silvertips just 24 hours prior. It was a penalty filled affair as 86 minutes in the box were handed out by the officials as the Tigers couldn't muster any offense on the power play and lost 5-2.
Quick starts were the key to the success of the Tigers last season and this year looked to be the same as Mason Shaw tipped in a David Quenneville point shot which found it's way past Cougars goaltender Nick McBride, who was still sporting his green pads. Prince George clawed their way back into the game with a power play marker as Jared Bethune re-directed a point shot past Nick Schneider. Rookie Caleb Fantillo found himself defending his teammate as Tate Olson took a high hit on Ryan Jevne and dropped the gloves for his first WHL fight. Fantillo took on a much larger player in Olson as he gave up 4 inches and 30 pounds.
Quick goals have been trending throughout the 2015-16 season so far as multiple games have had goals scored within less than a minute of each other, both for themselves and the opponent. Saturday was no different. Prince George scored two quick goals to start the second period as Brogan O'Brien and Jansen Harkins scored 52 seconds apart to spark a 2 goal lead. Max Gerlach, who has been having a fine rookie season, climbed the Tigers back into the game with his 9th of the season putting home a pass from leading scorer Chad Butcher, cutting the visitors lead to 3-2. Before the period ended however, Prince George 20 year old Chase Witala, who seemed to be all over the ice, scored a hard working shorthanded goal, the 7th given up by the Tabbies this season. Medicine Hat trailed 4-2 after 40 minutes.
The final frame started with the Cougars backing off, protecting their lead and not allowing Medicine Hat any room to move. They would pressure the Tigers power play, forcing turnovers and buzzing all night long as the momentum from an early penalty kill was seen throughout their play. Medicine Hat would get a few chances on the man advantage but ended up going 0/9, an odd stat considering the Tigers ranked 4th in home power play percentage heading into the night. Prince George would add one more late and seal the game 5-2 in front of 4155 fans at the Canalta Centre.
