June 30, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks only needed four, but they got six runs in the second inning, and went on to defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps, 10-3, Monday night in a rain-shortened game at Four Winds Field. With heavy rain coming in from the west, the game was called with South Bend batting in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Cabrera (3-6) battled not only a potent South Bend (6-5, 45-35) lineup, but himself in a three-inning start. He walked a season-high four and gave up six runs - all scoring in a nine-batter second inning - while striking out four and allowing four hits. The first four batters Cabrera faced in the fourth inning reached, and three were knocked in on a bases-clearing double by Marty Herum. Four batters later Daniel Palka hit a two-run home run down the right field line. Palka's homer was initially ruled foul, but after umpires Dave Attridge and Mike Savakinas consulted with the managers of both teams, Palka was awarded his league-leading 15th home run.
Fort Wayne (5-6, 35-45) sent four or fewer batters to the plate in the first five innings against South Bend starter Sean Furney (3-4) but, trailing, 8-0, got on the board in the sixth with a leadoff home run by Dustin Peterson. The 19-year-old's longball was his eighth of the year, which ties him for the team lead with Ryan Miller. Nick Schulz collected his first Midwest League RBI by sending River Stevens around to score later in that same inning.
Making matters worse for the TinCaps, Silver Hawks third baseman Marty Herum hit an inside-the-park home run in the seventh inning. He hit a sinking line drive to center field that went under Ronnie Richardson's glove. With no one to back up the ball and a centerfield fence 405 feet away from home, Herum was free to run and scored standing up.
Friday marked the TinCaps debut of 20-year-old Edwin Moreno, who started in right field and went 0-3 at the plate.
A seven-game road trip continues for the TinCaps as they travel to Dayton, Ohio, for the final time during the regular season. Tuesday night's game is scheduled for a 7:00 start, and will feature Kyle Lloyd on the mound for Fort Wayne and Dan Langfield as the starter for Dayton. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380 and TinCaps.com.
