Cougars Lose Closer to Promotion

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced that pitchers Jose Arias and Gerardo Concepcion have been activated from the disabled list. Pitcher Tyler Bremer has been promoted to Class-A Advanced Daytona, pitcher Pierce Johnson has been promoted to Double-A Tennessee and catcher Antonio Valerio has been transferred to the Cubs' Dominican League squad. Today's roster moves maintain the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players as the Cougars close a four-game homestand in Beloit this evening.

Bremer (27th round, 2012) becomes the fifth Cougars player this season to receive a promotion to Daytona. Bremer, along with former Cougars Nathan Dorris and Zack Godley, served as effective closers with Kane County before receiving promotions. Bremer assumed the closer's role earlier this season and compiled a 5-1 record, 2.57 ERA and 10 saves in 12 chances. Johnson (1st round supplemental, 2012 returned to Kane County on June 20 and started 2 games for the Cougars, posting a 2.45 ERA.

Arias (Non-drafted free agent, 2010) was named a Midwest League All-Star earlier this season but was unable to participate due to injury. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA in 16 games. Concepcion (Non-drafted free agent, 2012) last pitched for the Cougars on May 20. This season, the left-hander is 1-1 with a 4.81 ERA in 12 games. This past week, both pitchers made a pair of appearances with the Cubs' rookie level squad in Mesa.
