Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Comstock Park, Mich. - A late rally fell short as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) left the tying run in the on-deck circle in an 8-5 defeat to the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) on Monday afternoon. With the victory, the Whitecaps swept the four-game series.
Trailing 8-3, the top of the ninth started with a Darryl George infield single. He moved to second base on an error by third baseman Dominic Ficociello. One out later, Kean Wong doubled down the left-field line to drive George home. Oscar Hernandez later singled to drive home Wong, which moved the tying run into the on-deck circle. Montreal Robertson then finished the inning off to seal the win and a save.
The Whitecaps raced out to an early lead in the first inning, and added three more in the second. Three walks and run-scoring singles by Bennett Pickar, Austin Schotts, and Javier Betancourt stretched the lead to 4-0.
Bowling Green cut the lead in half in the fourth. Armando Araiza led off with a single, and one out later moved to second base on a hit by Juniel Querecuto. James Harris followed with a double off the left-field wall to score Araiza. George's groundout advanced Querecuto home, and the lead was sliced to 4-2.
Raph Rhymes drove home Schotts and Betancourt with a single in the fourth with two outs, and two more runs crossed in the fifth as the West Michigan offense continued its surge. Rhymes finished his day with three runs batted in and a pair of hits.
Ty Young led off the sixth with his third home run of the year. It sailed over the party area in right field, but the run was brought back quickly when Adames tripled and scored on an error.
The rally fell short, but the offense surged back after scoring two runs in the first three games. Querecuto tied a Hot Rods season-high with four hits, the second time he has achieved the feat.
Jon Maciel (4-3) started and worked five innings for the Whitecaps to earn his fourth win of the season. Robertson collected his sixth save by tossing the final three frames.
Jorge Rodriguez (2-5) took the loss for Bowling Green.
The Hot Rods now travel to Eastlake, Ohio for a three-game set against Lake County (Cleveland Indians). First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT, and fans can follow the action on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket beginning at 5:45 p.m. CT with the Pepsi Pre-Game Show. The Hot Rods return home on July 4, highlighted by a double-fireworks show following the game. For tickets and more information, fans can visit BGHotRods.com or call 270-901-2121.
