Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - After five hours of baseball, the Tucson Sidewinders emerged with a doubleheader sweep of the Portland Beavers with 8-0 and 2-1 wins Monday night at PGE Park.

Lance Cormier shut out the Beavers in the first game with a seven-hit complete game in the seven-inning contest. Cormier (1-1) struck out five and retired 11 straight at one point for his first win of the season for the Sidewinders (34-24).

It was the first complete game of his career and sent the Beavers (27-32) to their worst defeat of the season.

After three scoreless innings, the Sidewinders got all the offense they would need in the top of the fourth. Juan Brito, who had two hits and two runs scored in the contest, started the scoring with a two-run double to right-center. Noochie Varner followed with a two-run home run off Matt Bruback that barely cleared the left field wall. Andy Green later drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field and Brian Barden and Steve Neal singled home the final runs of the inning after the Sidewinders sent 12 men to the plate while taking a 7-0 lead.

Bruback (1-8) was chased as a result, suffering his eighth loss of the season by allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings, his shortest outing of the season.

Tucson tacked on a final run in the fifth on an RBI single by Cormier, who was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a sacrifice.

In the nightcap, Green's two-out, infield single to third in the top of the seventh scored Keoni DeRenne and broke a 1-1 tie to give the Sidewinders the sweep.

Tucson went up 1-0 on a solo shot by Craig Ansman in the second inning.

Freddy Guzman, who reached base in all four of his plate appearances in the second game, tied it in the sixth, scoring from third as pinch-hitter Bobby Scales put the ball into play.

Portland had the tying run at third base in the bottom of the seventh, but Jose Nieves grounded out to end the game.

Bart Miadich (2-3) gave up the seventh-inning run for his the loss. Greg Aquino (1-2) pitched the final 1.1 innings for the win.

Steve Watkins and Phil Stockman both pitched well in their starts, but neither factored in the decision. Watkins struck out five in 5.0 innings on the mound and has 21 strikeouts in 15.0 innings pitched with the Beavers in his three starts.

The teams conclude their series Tuesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. at PGE Park. The games features two major league veterans on the mound. Sterling Hitchcock gets his second rehab start for the Beavers, facing Tucson's Shane Reynolds, also on a rehab assignment.

NOTES: The San Diego Padres optioned right-hander Justin Germano to Portland on Monday. Germano is slated to join the team for its trip to Fresno ... Monday's first game was delayed 20 minutes due to lightning ... the Beavers are 1-3 in doubleheader games this season ... the seven runs allowed in the fourth inning of the first game was a season-high.
