Nashville Sounds News Release

METAIRIE, La. – Right-hander Nelson Figueroa tossed Nashville's first complete game of the 2004 season and Sounds batters belted three home runs in a 5-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on a rain-filled Tuesday afternoon in the finale of a four-game series at Zephyr Field.

With the victory, Nashville (30-28) improved to two games above .500 for the first time since May 21. The second-place Sounds posted a 3-1 series victory over their division rivals, their third winning road series this season.

Figueroa's 107-pitch effort concluded with an efficient four-pitch ninth for the veteran right-hander.

The start of the game was delayed approximately 38 minutes before play began, the first of two rain delays the clubs would endure on the afternoon.

Nashville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, a frame that was interrupted by a 22-minute rain delay. Mike Moriarty doubled down the left-field line against New Orleans starter Jared Fernandez, moved up to third on a wild pitch, and scored the contest's first run on catcher Keith McDonald's sacrifice fly. The rain delay occurred during McDonald's at-bat; play was halted with a 1-1 count on the backstop.

Outfielder J.J. Davis crushed a Fernandez knuckleball off the scoreboard in left-center to lead off the top of the fourth inning and double the Sounds' advantage to 2-0. The moonshot, his second roundtripper of the year, also accounted for the slugger's second hit of his rehab stint with Nashville; both knocks have been home runs.

Zephyrs third-sacker Jason Alfaro put the home team on the board with a leadoff solo blast to left off Nashville starter Nelson Figueroa in the bottom of the fifth inning, reducing the Sounds' lead to 2-1.

Sounds third baseman Chris Truby got the run back in the top of the sixth when he belted his ninth home run of the season, a one-out solo shot off Fernandez. The longball staked Nashville to a 3-1 lead, gave Truby his team-leading 36th RBI of the year, and extended the veteran's hitting streak to seven games – the longest active streak on the club.

Shaun Skrehot continued his recent hot hitting with a 2-for-3 outing that included a two-run homer in the top of the seventh off Fernandez that extended the Nashville lead to 5-1. The tater was his second of the year. Skrehot finished the four-game series in New Orleans with seven RBI after arriving in the Big Easy with only two RBI through his first 25 games. The red-hot infielder is batting .333 (20-for-60) in his last 17 contests.

Royce Huffman continued a strong offensive series for the Zephyrs with a 2-for-4 afternoon that included a double. He finished the four-game set with 10 hits in 16 at-bats.

Figueroa (5-4) picked up his first victory in six starts while tossing Nashville's first complete game of the 2004 season. The hurler also enjoyed a 2-for-4 afternoon at the plate, posting a single and double in his first two at-bats. The knocks were the right-hander's first two hits of the season.

Fernandez (2-4) took the loss after allowing five runs over his seven innings of work for the Z's, surrendering three home runs along the way.

The Sounds join the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day tomorrow before continuing their road trip on Thursday in Albuquerque with the opener of a four-game set. The Isotopes lead the 2004 season series, 5-3.

Nashville left-hander Sean Burnett (1-3, 4.66) will take the hill in the 8:11 p.m. CDT series opener on Thursday evening and face Albuquerque southpaw Michael Tejera (5-1, 3.79).
