Reliever Childers activated

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that right-handed reliever Jason Childers has been activated and left-handed reliever Pedro Borbon has been transferred to Short-Season Single-A Vermont. The Trappers have made a total of 34 transactions involving 23 players since May 4. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and four outfielders, plus five players (right-hander Seung Song, right-hander Christian Parker, infielders Henry Mateo and Maicer Izturis and catcher Randy Knorr) on the disabled list.

Childers, 29, was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers with outfielder Jason Belcher in exchange for outfielder Peter Bergeron on Monday, June 7. The native of Statesboro, Georgia was 1-0, 1.26 (28.2 IP - 4 ER) with 15 saves in 24 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis this season and was tied for the International League lead in saves at the time of the trade. Childers did not allow a run in his last seven outings with the Indians, recording five saves in that span, which covered 8.2 innings. He was originally signed by the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent on June 14, 1997 and has spent his entire career in the Milwaukee farm system. Childers was 5-4, 2.29 (63.0 IP - 16 ER) with 10 saves in 46 appearances with Indianapolis in 2003, his first full season at the Triple-A level. His younger brother Matt is a pitcher in the Milwaukee system.

Borbon, 36, was 0-0, 7.00 (9.0 IP - 7 ER) in eight appearances with the Trappers. He was signed as a free agent by San Diego in the off-season, but was released by the Padres in Spring Training. Borbon spent most of the 2003 campaign with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, going 5-2, 2.08 (69.1 IP - 16 ER) in 32 appearances (six starts). The native of Mao, Dominican Republic also went 0-1, 3.12 (8.2 IP - 3 ER) with one save in seven outings with Triple-A Memphis and was 0-1, 20.25 (4.0 IP - 9 ER) in seven appearances with the St. Louis Cardinals. Borbon was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Chicago White Sox on June 4, 1988. He has appeared in 368 Major League games, going 16-16 with a 4.68 ERA (271.0 IP - 141 ER) and six saves with Atlanta, Los Angeles, Toronto, Houston and St. Louis. Borbon is 45-32 with a 3.07 ERA (738.2 IP - 252 ER) and 15 saves in 319 minor league outings (62 starts).
