Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - With just four hits Tuesday afternoon, it's not like the Beavers officially broke out of their offensive slump. But at least it's a start.

The Beavers, who rank last in the Pacific Coast League in hitting after scoring just one run in a doubleheader loss on Monday, settled for a split in their series with the Tucson Sidewinders with a 5-1 victory in front of 2,259 at PGE Park Tuesday.

Portland (28-32) dug an early 1-0 hole, but came back to take the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fifth, adding to that with three more in the sixth.

Eddie Oropesa (1-0) got his first win for the Beavers. Mike Schultz (0-1) took the loss.

Tucson (34-25) wasted little time getting on the board. Andy Green led off with a double against starter Sterling Hitchcock, who was making his second rehab start for the Beavers. Hitchcock's error allowed Brian Barden to reach and Craig Ansman followed with a single to shallow center to score Green with the game's first run.

Green led the way at the plate for the Sidewinders with three doubles.

Hitchcock worked the first 2.1 innings and had a 1-2 count on Barden before abruptly leaving the game with a strained groin, the second setback of his rehab stint with the club. Hitchcock had his last scheduled start scrapped on May 25 when he originally strained his groin while warming up in the Beavers bullpen.

Hitchcock's counterpart, Shane Reynolds, fared better in his second rehab start for the Sidewinders. Reynolds was perfect through 3.2 innings before allowing a fourth-inning double to Jose Nieves, who has a six-game hitting streak.

Reynolds was sharp in the start, going 4.1 innings and surrendering a pair of hits before handing it to the bullpen with one out in the fifth.

The Beavers loaded the bases following Reynolds' exit and took the lead with a two-run single through the right side of the infield by pinch-hitter Alex Fernandez. The Beavers had scored just one run over their last 19 innings going into the two-run fifth.

Portland rallied to take a 5-1 lead in the sixth, plating three more runs in the inning. Freddy Guzman, who stole his 10th base for the Beavers, scored on a passed ball while Humberto Quintero had an RBI single and Ben Risinger added a sac fly to center that scored Joe Gerber.

The Beavers are off on Wednesday before beginning a four-game series at Fresno on Thursday night.

NOTES: Right-hander Mike Bumstead, who worked 1.2 innings in the game, was transferred to Class AA Mobile after the game ... the Beavers drew all five of their walks over the fifth and sixth innings ... the game completed the season series between the two clubs. It ended in an 8-8 tie ... the Beavers used five pitchers in the game, including four left-handers ... fifteen different players made the last out of an inning.
