
Sidewinders sweep twin bill

Tucson swept a double-header from Portland Monday night defeating the Beavers by scores of 8-0 and 2-1 at PGE Park. The wins moved the Sidewinders to within a half game of first place in the PCL South Division.
Lance Cormier threw a seven-hit complete game shutout of the Beavers as Tucson claimed the first game 8-0. Cormier didn't walk a batter while striking out five.
In game one the Sidewinders broke up a scoreless game scoring seven runs in the top of the fourth off Beavers stater Matt Bruback. Juan Brito plated the first two Sidewinders run with a double. Noochie Varner followed with a two-run homer to push the lead to 4-0. Andy Green's sacrifice fly scored Jerry Gil for a 5-0 advantage. Before the inning was over Brian Barden and Steve Neal added run scoring singles in a frame that saw 12 Sidewinders come to the plate.
Cormier also went 2-3 with a double, run scored, RBI and sacrifice bunt.
The Sidewinders held on for a 2-1 win in the nightcap. Craig Ansman started the scoring in the nightcap with a solo home run in the second off Beavers starter Steve Watkins.
Portland finally scored its first run of the double-header 12.2 innings into the twin bill with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Bobby Scales rolled a ball in front of the plate. Juan Brito's throw to first was in time to get Scales but the speedy Freddy Guzman raced home from third to score and tie the game.
Tucson regained the lead in the top of the seventh against Beaver closer Bart Miadich. With Keoni DeRenne at third base and Noochie Varner at second, Andy Green rolled a bunt single up the third base line that scored DeRenne with the eventual winning run.
Greg Aquino earned his first win of the year throwing 1.1 of scoreless baseball. Aquino worked around runners at first and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when he got Jose Nieves to ground out to third to end the game.
Tucson is 34-24. The Sidewinders and Beavers will finish off the four-game series with a 12:05 p.m. start Tuesday afternoon. Shane Reynolds (0-0 6.75) will continue his rehab assignment for Tucson with the start. The Beavers will counter with Sterling Hitchcock (0-1 9.82). The game will BE TAPE DELAYED AT 7:00 p.m. on Cool 1450 AM.
