Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE (AUGUST 10, 2010) - Brandon Short hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning to snap a tie game and the Dash held on to beat the Blue Rocks 5-4 on Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium. The sloppy, but entertaining game featured five combined errors, including three by Winston-Salem, but the Dash picked up the win to even the series at one game apiece.
Wilmington (24-21, 56-59) struck first against Winston starter Terry Doyle. Ernesto Mejia led off the second inning with a double and scored on Nick Francis' RBI single to give the Rocks a 1-0 lead.
The Dash (22-22, 65-49) tied things in the fourth with a two-out rally. Wilmington starter Byan Paukovits walked Josh Phegley and Ozzie Lewis after retiring the first two batters of the inning. Jose Martinez leveled the contest with a base hit to center to score Phegley.
Winston grabbed its first lead in the fifth. Greg Paiml was hit by a pitch and reached third on a pickoff attempt that bounced past the first baseman. Paukovits then walked Short to put men on the corners. Drew Garcia followed with an RBI single to right to give the Dash a 2-1 lead. After a walk to Jon Gilmore loaded the bases, Blue Rocks manager Brian Rupp called for lefty reliever Ivor Hodgson to face Seth Loman.
The left-hander slugger bounced the first pitch he saw back to Hodgson, who made a tremendous snag to start a 1-6-3 double play. Short scored from third base on the twin killing to put Winston on top 3-1.
The Blue Rocks responded right away against Doyle in the bottom of the inning. After retiring the first two batters, Doyle walked Patrick Norris and gave up a single to Christian Colon. High Point native Wil Myers followed with a double to left field that scored both runners and tied the game. Charlis Burdie then entered to retire Francis and strand the go-ahead run at second base.
Hodgson stuck around for the sixth inning, but his defense let him down, allowing Winston-Salem to take the lead. Martinez singled with one out and moved to second when a Kenny Williams, Jr. ground ball went through the legs of the shortstop Colon. After Paiml struck out, Short drilled a 2-2 pitch to left field for a two-run triple that pushed the Dash ahead 5-3.
Burdie (3-2) pitched well into the eighth, but allowed a two-out double to Francis to bring the tying run to the plate. Tyson Corley was then summoned to face Eddie Prasch, who promptly singled to right field, bringing home Francis. With the lead down to one run, Corley got Joey Lewis to ground out with the tying run at first base to end the inning.
After the Dash went scoreless in the top of the ninth, Corley pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half to close out the Winston win. Corley picked up his sixth save in eight chances in the process.
Burdie got the win, allowing one run on two hits in three innings. Hodgson (5-9) suffered the tough-luck loss in relief, allowing two unearned runs over four innings while registering five strikeouts.
Short was one of two Dash players who had multiple hits on the night, with Martinez being the other. Winston's centerfielder has had back-to-back multi-hit games after going eight straight contests without one. He has tripled in both games of the series to move his season total to five.
The series has not been kind to either defense so far, as the teams have combined for nine errors in the first two games (Winston with five, Wilmington four).
The teams will play game three of the series on Wednesday. RHP Stephen Sauer (6-9, 5.13) opposes LHP Buddy Baumann (3-2, 2.36) in a 7:05 p.m. start. The audio broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
