Kinston Indians News Release
A Kinston comeback was cut down, as Salem took the Indians down 4-3 in ten innings, Tuesday night in Virginia.
Kinston ace Joe Gardner got off to a rough start, as Salem's Mitch Dening and Peter Hissey led off the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back doubles. After a one-out walk to Will Middlebrooks, Alex Hassan gave the Red Sox a 3-0 lead with a two RBI double. Gardner would settle down after the first inning, allowing just four more hits (all singles) in his final six innings of work. Gardner pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four. Gardner's ERA went up slightly to 2.91, keeping him in the top five in the Carolina League.
Salem starter Mark Holliman was solid early, limiting Kinston to just two hits through the first five innings. In the top of the sixth frame things would change as Doug Pickens started off with a double. Donnie Webb followed with a single and Karexon Sanchez loaded the bases after a walk. Jeremie Tice then delivered an RBI double to score Pickens and cut the Salem lead to 3-1. After Chun Chen struck out, Bellows snuck a single through the right side to cut the Salem lead to one. Abner Abreu then struck out and Juan Diaz grounded out to end the threat. Holliman went six innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out three.
Kinston then tied the game in the top of the eighth inning off of Salem reliever Cesar Cabral. Bellows and Abreu started things by banging out back-to-back, one-out singles. Juan Diaz then lined a single to center to score Bellows and tie things at three.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the tenth inning. Kinston reliever Chris Jones was solid in the eighth and ninth frames, retiring the first six batters he faced. In the tenth Ryan Dent started things with a lead-off bunt. Dening followed with a second straight perfect bunt to put runners on first and second. After a Hissey walk, Oscar Tejeda delivered the game winning hit to left field. Jones (2-3, 1.71) took the loss for Kinston. Cabral (1-0) picked up the win for Salem. Tice, Bellows, Diaz and Pickens each had two hits for Kinston.
