Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC- After dropping three straight games in which the Pelicans had leads, the team could ill afford to drop another one, what with the Southern Division only staying struggling for so long. Behind three Myrtle Beach homers, two from leadoff hitter Mycal Jones, the Pelicans tacked on four runs in the final two innings to hold off the Keys and even their four-game series at one apiece.
Matt Crim got the nod on the hill for the Pelicans, looking to build off his near complete-game last week against Kinston, but Crim's command was inconsistent in walking a season-high five batters in four innings of work. Crim did induce his league-leading 23rd double play in the second inning, however.
For the second consecutive game, the Keys got on the board first with a pair of two-out runs in the initial inning. After Crim retired the first two batters, Ronnie Welty and Miguel Abreu drew consecutive walks, and the Keys took advantage. L.J. Hoes and Billy Rowell knocked back to back singles to give the Keys an early 2-0 lead before the Pelicans had a chance to bat.
The Birds did get one of those runs back in the bottom of the first, however, as Dan Nelson got the homer parade started with an opposite field shot against Keys starter Ryan O'Shea, his ninth of the year, to cut the Keys lead in half. In the third, the Pelicans took a two-run lead with a three-run inning. Mycal Jones began a huge night at the plate with a solo homer off O'Shea (6-7), his fourth of the year, to tie the game at two apiece. An error from Pedro Florimon scored another run while Gerry Rodriguez's sacrifice fly gave the Birds a two-run lead.
Former Pelican Phillip Britton got the Keys close in the fourth with an RBI double, but the Pelicans answered right back in the next half inning when Jones crushed his second homer of the day, a frozen rope that reached the first row of the left field bleachers to make it 5-3. For Jones, it was his first career multi-homer game and just the second of the year for the Pelicans.
With the Pelican lead standing at 6-3, the Keys staged one final comeback in the seventh inning, loading the bases with nobody out against reliever Thomas Berryhill, who was working in his third inning. After Pelican killer Miguel Abreu roped a two-run single, Berryhill (1-1) coaxed a 6-4-3 double play out of Hoes and got a ground ball from Billy Rowell to end the threat and send the Birds back to the dugout with the lead intact.
After that scare, the Pelicans would put the game away, getting a run back on a Sammy Sime single off reliever John Mariotti in the seventh, and three more in the eighth broke the game wide open. In the eighth, a pair of errors opened the door for the Pelicans as Jones, Harrilchak, and Nelson all came around to score with Nelson and Mike Jones providing the RBIs to make it a 10-5 game. Angelo Paulino got the final six outs to earn his third save of the season.
Every member of the Pelicans lineup recorded a base hit except for Harrilchak, who knocked in a run and scored a run to fill up the stat sheet. It was just the second double-digit hit night for the Pelicans in their last eight games, as the Birds won just their second game of this eight-game homestand.
These two teams will be back tomorrow for game three starting at 7:05 ET.
With just two more Webkinz Wednesdays left in the 2010 season, Pelicans fans are running out of chances to pick up their very own collectable Webkinz at BB&T Coastal Field. For game three of the final four-game series at home for the Pelicans this season, the first 500 kids 12 and under through the gates will receive the Oriole Webkinz. The prize is fitting, considering the Pelicans are playing the Baltimore Orioles affiliate, the Frederick Keys.
