Potomac Nationals News Release
The Potomac Nationals got back on track with a 5-2 comeback victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats on a sweltering Tuesday afternoon in Woodbridge. With the victory, the Nationals preserved their place atop the second half standings in the Carolina League and pulled within a game of .500.
Adrian Alaniz, the Nats' steadiest starter over their recent surge to the top of the table, got knocked around for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Jose Gualdron and Neftali Soto lashed a pair of one-out singles and scored on Kyle Day's two-out double to right field. Alaniz settled in and hurled five scoreless innings thereafter; he struck out eight and walked three in another quality start.
Alaniz would leave with the game tied after Potomac pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Bill Rhinehart led off the fourth with a monster homer to right on the first pitch from Lynchburg's Curtis Partch. With one out, Jose Lozada hit a double to right and scored on a two-out single from Chris Curran. With that, the game was tied 2-2.
Potomac and Lynchburg traded zeros until the bottom of the seventh. Pedro Villareal came on for his Hillcats debut and ran into trouble against the top of the order. With one out, Dan Lyons and Mike Burgess hit back-to-back singles. Lyons scored on a Tyler Moore ground out to first to give Potomac their first lead of the series, 3-2. Rhinehart then hit a ball off the glove of Jose Gualdron, which was ruled an error, scoring Burgess to increase the P-Nats lead to 4-2.
The next inning Potomac got another run on a Burgess RBI-infield-single to extend the lead to 5-2.
The Potomac bullpen was dominant again. A.J. Morris, Cory VanAllen and Pat McCoy combined to go three scoreless innings. Morris earned the win while McCoy picked up his second save of the year.
