
Short-Handed Santa Cruz Falls Short in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - The NBA D-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors (9-8) fell to the Austin Spurs (13-3) 111-92 on Tuesday night at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.
Santa Cruz's Daniel Nwaelele notched a team-high 25 points and 9 rebounds after receiving his first start of the season. Darington Hobson recorded 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Verdell Jones III and Jarred Shaw added 14 points apiece.
A total of eight players for the Warriors suited up for tonight's contest. Elliot Williams and Daniel Orton were both out against Austin.
The Spurs were paced by Tim Hardaway Jr., on assignment from the Atlanta Hawks, who posted a game-high of 30 points. Youssou Ndoye recorded 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Orlando Johnson, Cady Lalanne, Nick Johnson, and Ray McCallum all posted double-figure scoring efforts for Austin.
Santa Cruz would take the early lead of the game with an 8-0 run to start the first quarter. Austin responded with a 7-0 run to make up the difference and get back within 1 point of the Warriors. Santa Cruz would hold the one-point edge over the Spurs heading into the second frame.
Austin began the second quarter with a 16-4 run in the first four minutes of the second quarter to claim a double-digit advantage over the Warriors. Santa Cruz fought back to cut the deficit to 3 points heading into the lockeroom.
The momentum shifted back and forth out of the break with Santa Cruz tying the game midway through the quarter. The Warriors would claim their final lead of the game with just under 3 minutes left to play in the third behind a Hobson reverse-lay-up. Austin finished the quarter on a 10-1 run and holding the nine-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Austin continued to grow their lead to as many as 22 points in the final frame, before claiming the 111-92 point victory over the Warriors.
The Santa Cruz Warriors will face the Austin Spurs again tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. PST at Cedar Park Center tomorrow night.
