'Birds Starter: Tony Butler
LAST SEASON IN GCL AND ABERDEEN: Made 10 relief appearances in the Gulf Coast League in an attempt to regain his strength after having scar tissue removed from his labrum following the 2008 campaign. Pitched in only 12.1 total innings.
2008 SEASON IN DELMARVA: In 11 starts, Butler went 3-4 with a 4.42 ERA. Best month of the season was April, when he posted a 1-1 mark with a 3.41 ERA. His best outing came on April 30th against the Lexington Legends. He went a season high six innings and did not allow a run. Butler also fanned a season high nine batters. He pitched at NewBridge Bank Park on May 25th against the Grasshoppers. In 3.2 innings, he surrendered just three hits and a single run. Butler also struck out four.
THE TRADE: Butler was traded from the Seattle Mariners on February 8, 2008 along with OF Adam Jones, LHP George Sherrill, RHP Kam Mickolio and RHP Chris Tillman in exchange for LHP Erik Bedard.
DRAFTED: Butler was selected in the third round of the 2006 First Year Player Draft (81st overall) out of Oak Creek High School.
IMMORTALIZED WITH BOBBLEHEAD: When Butler was playing for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, they had a Tony Butler Bobblehead Night.
OAK CREEK HIGH SCHOOL: Went 11-1 with a microscopic ERA of 0.71 during his senior season at Oak Creek. He led Oak Creek to three straight Wisconsin State Championships. He was named the W.B.C.A. State Player of the Year. He was also named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in '05. He holds the single season records at Oak Creek for wins (11), ERA (0.71), RBIs (51) and strike outs in a single game (19). Butler struck out 332 batters between 2003 and 2005.
TYLER KELLY'S BIG NIGHT: Former UC Davis star Ty Kelly went 2-5 with a career best five RBIs. He hit his second professional home run in the second inning (3-run) to give the 'Birds a 4-0 lead. Kelly had only 18 RBIs in 61 games in his first professional campaign (Aberdeen) last year.
FOURTH IN THE LEAGUE: Although its early, the Shorebirds rank fourth in the league with a .294 team batting average after the first series of the season. The 'Birds lead the league with 15 doubles and four triples.
FIRST STARTER TO WIN: No Shorebirds starter has been hit with a loss, but Jesse Beal was the first to earn a win last night. He tossed five shutout innings. He also struck out four and did not walk a batter.
EIGHT-FOR-NINE: The Shorebirds are 8-for-9 in stolen base attempts through four games this year. Steve Bumbry was the only one caught and he was picked off and was tagged out at second. T.J. Baxter is second in the SAL with four stolen bases.
KELLY AND JENSEN REUNITE: Ty Kelly (Shorebirds) and Kyle Jensen (Grasshoppers) were little league teammates and high school teammates at St. Mary's HS. Kelly hit just shy of .400 with six homers as a senior at St. Mary's. Jensen hit .411 with five homers as a senior at St. Mary's. Jensen also pitched and was named the SJAA Pitcher of the Year (8-0).
