
Legends Win Big in Series Opener in Kannapolis

The Lexington Legends pounded out 15 hits and beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 12-1 Monday night in the opening game of a four-game series in Kannapolis.
J.D. Martinez and Kody Hinze had three hits each for Lexington. Jake Goebbert batted in four runs, and Martinez and Jiovanni Mier each had two RBI. After going three for five, Martinez is batting .476 for the season (10 for 21).
The Legends scored twice in the first inning. Grant Hogue reached first on an error by second baseman Daniel Wagner. Miguel Arrendell flied out, but Mier singled, moving Hogue to second, from where he scored on a base hit by Goebbert. Martinez followed with another single, scoring Mier.
Kannapolis got its only run of the night when Jordan Cheatham led off the bottom of the first with a long home run to right field. The Legends took charge after that.
Lexington sent 10 men to the plate in the fourth inning and scored five runs to lead 7-1. Martinez doubled to lead off. Jonathan Meyer singled, sending Martinez to third. A single by Kody Hinze drove in Martinez as Meyer went to second. Andy Simunic sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Garcia followed with a base hit that scored Meyer and sent Hinze to third. Hogue walked to load the bases, and Miguel Arrendell singled home another run to make the score 5-1. After Mier popped out to first, Goebbert singled, scoring two more.
The Legends added four more runs in the sixth, two coming home on Mier's double, and one more in the seventh.
Brandt Walker (1-0) worked five innings and got the win in his first start as a Legend. Jose Trinidad pitched three scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit, and Daniel Sirisky allowed two hits but no runs in the ninth.
Kannapolis starter Justin Collop (0-1) took the loss. The Legends are now 3-2 on the season, and Kannapolis remains winless at 0-5. The two teams meet again Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
