Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (4-1) edged the Savannah Sand Gnats (3-2) by a score of 2-0 Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

Augusta took an early lead against Gnats starter Taylor Whitenton on a solo home run from third baseman Chris Dominguez in the second inning. In the third, Ryan Cavan bounced a ball through the right side of the drawn-in Gnats infield to bring home Augusta's Nick Liles with the game's second and final run. Whitenton lasted 3.1 innings in his Sand Gnats debut, yielding the two runs, while walking three and striking out three.

The Gnats bullpen of John Church and Darin Gorski gave up just two hits in a combined 5.2 scoreless innings behind Whitenton, fanning eight without issuing a walk.

GreenJackets starter Kyle Vasquez shut out the Gnats through six dominant innings.

The Gnats best scoring chance came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Two walks and an infield hit loaded the bases for shortstop Wilmer Flores with two outs. Flores ground the first pitch sharply to shortstop, ending the threat.

Savannah's Opening Night starter, Armando Rodriguez (0-0, 1.00) takes on RHP Jeremy Toole (NR) Tuesday at 7:05 in game two of this four-game series. The Gnats pregame show on News/Talk 630 WBMQ and online at www.sandgnats.com begins at 6:45.
