Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns tried to rally but in the end fell to the Lakewood BlueClaws 7-4 on Monday night.
Suns starter Paul Demny (0-1) looked strong to start but had trouble in the third inning. After Domingo Santana walked with no outs, Lakewood designated hitter Anthony Hewitt hit a home run to left field for a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jonathan Villar scored on a Leandro Castro sacrifice fly to left to put Lakewood up 3-0.
The Suns responded in the third. With the bases loaded against BlueClaws starter Jonathan Pettibone, first baseman Brett Newsome drew a walk, scoring Adrian Nieto to cut the score to 3-1.
Next inning on the first batter, right fielder Destin Hood hit the first home run of the season for the Suns over the left field wall, cutting the deficit to one.
After both sides scored one run in the fifth, the BlueClaws scored again in the eighth. Castro doubled to lead off then scored on catcher Sebastian Valle's double off Mitchell Clegg to go up 5-3.
The Suns threatened but could not close the gap as Lakewood scored twice in the ninth. The Suns brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but fell short, losing 7-4.
With a single in the second, Destin Hood increased his hit streak to five games. Shortstop Francisco Soriano also increased his hit streak to five games with a bunt single in the fifth.
Demny got the loss after pitching three innings, allowing three runs and striking out four. Clegg pitched five and one-third innings of relief of Demny, striking out three and allowing four runs. Patrick Arnold came in during the ninth and pitched two-thirds with a strikeout and did not allow a base-runner.
