Hickory Crawdads News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - After a dramatic extra-inning victory on Sunday, the Crawdads dropped the series opener against the Asheville Tourists, 10-2, in front of 1,016 at McCormick Field in Asheville on Monday night.
The Tourists (3-2) jumped out to a three run lead in the first off Hickory starter RHP Neil Ramirez (0-1, 11.12 ERA). With CF Eliezer Mesa standing on second, 2B Angelys Nina hit a home run to left field for the first two runs of the game. Later in the inning, RF Orlando Sandoval walked, stole second and third, and scored on LF Tyler Massey's groundout to extend the lead to 3-0.
Asheville added another run in the second inning when Nina skied a sacrifice fly to right field with SS Joey Wong coming in from third to score. The 'Dads countered with a run of their own in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and none out, DH Cristian Santana grounded into a force out with SS Edwin Garcia racing home to trim the lead to 4-1.
The Tourists added to their lead, scoring three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 9-1 lead. 3B Joseph Sanders drove in two runs on a double to left in the fifth and LF Tyler Massey singled to bring in Sanders. A wild pitch by RHP Braden Tullis and a sac fly off the bat of 1B Jared Clark accounted for the two runs in the sixth.
The 'Dads (3-2) inched closer in the seventh. SS Edwin Garcia singled and scored on a triple launched to center by CF Cody Podraza. Garcia, 2-for-4, and Podraza, 1-for-3, accounted for the only hits in the game for Hickory with Garcia scoring both runs.
With the bases loaded in the eighth, RHP Hector Nelo uncorked a wild pitch, bringing in Wong from third, to cap the evening's scoring at 10-2.
Asheville starter LHP Jonathan Vargas (0-0, 2.25 ERA) struck out six batters in his four innings of work, allowing just one base hit and one run. RHP Chris Rose (4-0, 4.15 ERA) followed Vargas with two perfect innings of relief to pick up the win.
Ramirez was saddled with the loss for Hickory, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out five through four and two-thirds innings. Tullis relinquished two unearned runs in two-and-one-third innings, with Nelo giving up one run in his lone inning of work.
