Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
For the second straight night the road team slugged themselves past the home team and for the fifth straight night, the Kannapolis Intimidators lost to open the 2010 season at 0-5. In game one of a four game series the Lexington Legends belted out 15 hits and 12 runs en route to a 12-1 victory on Monday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Intimidators (0-5) and Jordan Cheatham got the bats rolling as Cheatham, the leadoff man, homered down the right field line to lead the game off but that was the lone run of offense as they were kept at bay all night long by Legends (3-2) pitching.
Brandt Walker, who went 1-7 last year with Greenville, went five strong inning with his lone blemish, the Cheatham home run. Walker (1-0) picked up the win and got shutout relief from Jose Trinidad and Dan Sarisky.
Justin Collop started the game and allowed 12 hits and 11 runs, nine earned in his five innings of work. He allowed two in the first before settling down to work scoreless innings in the second and third but had a lot of trouble in the fourth and sixth innings. In both of those innings, the Legends batted around and Collop was chased four batters into the sixth inning without recording an out. Ryan Buch came in to pitch and tossed two, allowing an unearned run and three hits. Drew O'Neil worked two quick innings to end the ballgame.
The Intimidators had six hits on the night, three by first baseman Jorge Castillo. They also committed four errors, the highest total of the 2010 season.
Each member of the Legends recorded a hit except Andrew Simunic. Jacob Goebbert had two hits and four RBI while Jose Martinez and Kody Hinze each had three hits.
The Intimidators will be after win number one again on Tuesday as Matt Hopps will take to the mound. Hopps threw two scoreless of relief on Saturday night. He will be opposed by 2009 second round pick and top prospect Tanner Bushue. The game is a 7:05 pm first pitch on Tuesday night.
