Shorebirds Game Notes at West Virginia

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds clinched a winning record for the first half with a doubleheader sweep in West Virginia. Delmarva won the opener 6-4, and then the offense put up a season-high 14 runs in a 14-5 blowout in the nightcap. Mike Yastrzemski hit two home runs on the day. Delmarva goes for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon with Luc Rennie.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Luis Heredia starts for West Virginia in the finale. Heredia is making his fifth start of the season, having been ineffective so far. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 5.93 ERA so far, and he is yet to face Delmarva. Heredia did not pitch in between April 12th and June 5th due to shoulder discomfort. The 19-year-old hails from Mexico, signing with the Pirates in 2011. Heredia pitched with West Virginia last year as well, going 7-3 with a 3.05 ERA.

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles regained control of their series with a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Chris Davis hit his 11th home run of the season, and Bud Norris earned the victory with another quality start. Zach Britton held on for his 7th save of the season. The O's will go for a series win on Sunday. Right now, Baltimore is in 2nd place, 3 1/2 games back of Toronto.

THE IRON IS HOT: 20 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.

Yastrzemski, along with four other Shorebirds (Dosch, Harvey, Va- der and Yacabonis) was named to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. Yastrzemski cur- rently leads the league in triples with 10, and outfield assists with 12. He has two multi- HR games this season, including Saturday's game one in West Virginia.

WHO'S HOT - JON KELLER

The Shorebirds reliever has been a key part of the impressive Delmarva bullpen. Since allowing five runs in his first 4 appearances, Keller has given up just one run in his last 12 outings, with at least 2 Ks every time out.

WHO ELSE - TREY MANCINI

The Shorebirds first baseman had a 17-game hitting streak snapped on Saturday. Mancini is second on the team with 38 RBIs, while leading the team in batting average (.315) and hits (81).
