Game #67 (of 137)

RH Robinson Leyer (4-3, 3.16) vs. RH Domingo German (6-2, 2.31)

Today's Preview:The Intimidators (A, White Sox) find themselves participating in a game with South Atlantic League Northern Division First Half championship implications in the First Half finale against the Greensboro Grasshoppers (A, Marlins), which can clinch a playoff berth with a win or Hagerstown loss today. The only way the Grasshoppers don't win the first half is if they lose and Hagerstown wins. Kannapolis sends perhaps the league's hottest pitcher since mid-April to the mound as Robinson Leyer makes his team-leading 13th start of the year against one of the league's ERA leaders in Domingo German.

Intimidating Starters: Robinson Leyer, 21, makes his 13th start and first against a Marlins affiliate in today's First Half finale. The right-hander is coming off a career-high nine strike- outs over a career-long 7.0 scoreless innings on June 10 against Savannah, his second 7.0-inning outing in a row. Leyer has had one of the hottest arms in the SAL since mid-April going 4-1 with a 1.59 ERA (10 ER/56.2 IP) in his last 10 starts, the best ERA on the circuit and eight-best in the Minors since April 16. He has given up three earned runs just once in his last 10 outings and has allowed one earned run or less in seven of his last 10 starts. The younger brother of former Intimidator Euclides Leyer, Robinson spent 2013 with Advanced Rookie Bristol, going 2-7 with a 6.35 ERA in 13 starts. Leyer debuted in 2012 with the DSL White Sox, going 1-4 with a 3.12 ERA in 13 starts.

Hoppers Hurler: Domingo German, 21, makes his 14th start and sixth on the road as he tries to pitch the Grasshoppers into the postseason. German, who ranks fifth in the league with a 2.31 ERA, has won three of his last four starts, including a win at West Virginia on June 10 in his last outing. He opened his season with a career-high 10 strikeouts over 5.0 scoreless innings on April 6 against Hickory. German spun a career-high 7.2 innings May 26 at Lakewood, shutting out the BlueClaws along the way to pick up a victory. While German is not far removed from his last loss, two starts ago against Hagerstown, he gave up just one earned run over 4.2 innings in the defeat. His only other loss came April 17 in which he surrendered two runs over 7.0 innings to Delmarva. German split 2013 between Short-Season Batavia and the GCL Marlins. He made his pro debut with the DSL Marlins in 2010.

About Last Night:Ryan Newell struck out nine batters, one shy of his career high, over 7.2 innings as the Grasshoppers beat Kannapolis, 4-2, for Greensboro's ninth straight win. The Hoppers were led by J.T. Riddle, who went 3-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored and Yefri Perez who went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored as the lead off man. Thad Lowry suffered the loss for Kannapolis despite a quality start, giving up three runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings. Tyler Shryock went 2-4 with an RBI for Kannapolis, and he also scored a run on a Cleuluis Rondon double in the seventh inning. Sean Donatello spun the ninth for the save (10).

Ski Streaks:Trey Michalczewski collected a pair of singles, going 2-4 to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, the longest-active hitting streak in the league and tied for the fourth-longest in the SAL this season. The 19-year-old third baseman is now batting .371 (23-62) with 13 extra-base hits during the stretch (four home runs, eight doubles, and a triple) with 15 RBI. He has reached base safely in 19 straight games, the longest active on-base streak in the league this season. Additionally, Michalczewski has hit safely in his last 18 home games, a streak dating back to May 3, batting .387 (24-62) in that span.

Go West Young Man: The White Sox traded RHP Jake Sanchez to the Oakland Athletics on Saturday for Triple-A outfielder Michael Taylor, who will report to Charlotte. Sanchez, the lone All-Star for Kannapolis this season, was 5-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 15 games (nine starts). He opened the season in the Intimidators bullpen, converting all three of his save chances before moving into the rotation with a 10-strikeout performance over 6.0 shutout innings on April 24 at Rome. Jake Sanchez becomes the first Intimidators player traded away during a season since Chris Devenski was sent to the Astros as the Player To Be Named Later in July 2012 as the final piece of the Brett Myers deal.

Broadcast: This season, all 70 home games as well as select road games can be heard live on the Intimidators Baseball Network available at IntimidatorsBaseball.com and on the TuneIn Radio App. Today's pregame show begins at 1:50 p.m. with first pitch at 2:05 p.m. with Patrick Glory on the call.
