Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV- June 15, 2014) - The West Virginia Power fell for the 14th straight outing on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park, 6-5 to the Delmarva Shorebirds to finish the first half of the season. The Power scored five runs in the sixth to tie the game behind a JaCoby Jones grand slam, but Delmarva answered immediately and took the win.
The Shorebirds got on the board first in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Mike Yastrzemski. Delmarva blew the game open in the sixth with four runs behind two, two-run home runs from Trey Mancini and Conor Bierfeldt.
West Virginia, however, would respond with five runs in the sixth. JaCoby Jones blasted a grand slam, his second of the season, to bring the lead to within one run. Harold Ramirez brought home Wyatt Mathisen when he was hit by a pitch and the game was tied.
The Shorebirds would come right back with a run in the seventh on an RBI base knock from Chance Sisco that would give Delmarva the series sweep.
Power reliever Shane Carle (1-5) was charged with the loss while Delmarva hurler Jon Keller (3-0) stole the win and Jimmy Yacabonis (14) tallied the save. Wyatt Mathisen extended his league-best on-base streak to 19 games in the loss.
West Virginia will visit the Lakewood BlueClaws on Thursday, June 19, at FirstEnergy Park to open the second half of the season. The Power will return home Friday, June 27, to host the BlueClaws to open a seven homestand. For tickets or more information, call 304-344-2287 or visit www.wvpower.com.
