Hagerstown Suns News Release
About last game... The Hagerstown Suns (43-26) mustered just one run on four hits on Saturday, losing 3-1 to the Greenville Drive (34-34) at Municipal Stadium. It's the fourth loss in- a-row for Hagerstown, meaning the Suns are now tied with the Greensboro Grasshoppers (43- 26) atop the South Atlantic League's first half Northern Division standings with one game left for each team in the half and Greensboro controlling the tie-breaker.
The Drive took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to a solo homerun off the bat of 3B Carlos Asuaje. It was his eighth homerun of the season, and the second homerun hit by the Drive in the series.
The 1-0 lead remained until the top of the sixth, when Greenville scored its final pair of runs. Right fielder Forrest Allday began the inning by reaching on a bunt single. Shortstop Tzu- Wei Lin then hit a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by LHP Justin Thomas. Thomas attempted to throw out Allday at second but his throw sailed into center field, allowing Allday to advance to third. First baseman Jantzen Witte brought Allday home with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. A two- out line drive single by Manuel Margot drove in Lin from second for the other run in the frame.
The lone Hagerstown run crossed the plate in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs DH Jimmy Yezzo delivered an RBI single to right to cut the deficit to two. However, the rally would stall after that as the next batter, 2B Brennan Middleton, popped out to Witte in foul territory.
Starting RHP Lucas Giolito (2-1) suffered the hard luck loss for the Suns. He pitched five innings, giving up just one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out three.
Starting RHP Joe Gunkel (3-0) earned the win for Greenville. He threw six scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk while striking out six. RHP Taylor Grover pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Drive to record his first save of the year.
On the Mound... RHP Austin Voth will be heading to the hill this evening for the Suns. He is making his 13th start and appearance this season. He last pitched on June 10 at Lakewood, tossing seven scoreless innings and allowing one hit and one walk while striking out six. Voth was perfect through the first six innings in that outing. He has gotten a win in each of his last three starts, and has tossed at least six innings in each of those games. At home this year Voth is 1-2 with a 2.95 ERA. Overall this season he has worked 64.2 innings, surrendering 22 runs (16 earned) on 47 hits. He has walked 19 and has struck out 69. Tonight he goes up against LHP Trey Ball for Greenville. Ball is making his ninth start and appearance this season. He last threw on June 9 at home against Charleston, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing five earned runs on seven hits including two homers. He walked three in that game and struck out three. Tonight is Ball's first start on the road since May 19, and away from home this year he is 0-2 with an 11.12 ERA in two starts. Overall this season Ball has pitched 30.1 innings, surrendering 25 runs (24 earned) on 46 hits including four homers. He has walked 14 and has struck out 19.
First half title chase... The Suns are now tied with Greensboro atop the South Atlantic League's Northern Division, and Greensboro holds the tie-breaker. Each team has 1 game left.
Gearing up for Greenville... The Suns and Drive are playing the fourth of eight games against each other this season and the fourth of eight that will take place in Hagerstown.
