Gnats Drop Steamy Father's Day Matinee

Savannah, Ga.- On Fathers' Day at Historic Grayson Stadium, the Augusta GreenJackets came from behind to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 4-2. The Gnats finished the first half with the league's best record at 44-22.

The Gnats scored their only runs in the sixth inning. Shortstop Gavin Cecchini doubled to the left field wall to drive home Stefan Sabol to tie the game at 1-1 and then came home on an error to give the Gnats a 2-1 lead.

The GreenJackets regained the lead with two runs in the seventh off Ricky Knapp, who made his first relief appearance Sunday after 10 starts. With the bases loaded and two outs, right fielder Tyler Horan dropped a single into shallow center field which put the Jackets ahead 3-2. Augusta added a run on SS John Polonius' single through a drawn-in infield in the eighth inning.

Savannah starter Chris Flexen fought his way through four innings, yielding just one unearned run on three hits, three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and two wild pitches.

Savannah first baseman Dominic Smith, who turned 19 Sunday, was 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch.

The Gnats are off for the All-Star Break Monday through Wednesday and begin the second half with a seven game road trip to Greenville and Charleston on Thursday before returning home on June 27.

Ten Sand Gnats players along with manager Luis Rojas will head to Hickory, N.C., to represent the Southern Division team in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game.
