Hickory Bests BlueClaws in First-Half Finale

LAKEWOOD, NJ - Hickory topped the BlueClaws 14-4 on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park in the first-half finale.

The Crawdads (41-28) finished the half with wins in 15 of their 16 games, their only loss coming on Thursday in the first game of the four-game series with the BlueClaws, who finished the first half 27-42.

Hickory scored once in the second, twice in the third, three times in the fourth, four times in the fifth, and three times in the sixth to build a 13-0 lead. BlueClaws starter Tyler Viza (2-9) was charged with six runs, four earned in the loss. Shane Martin allowed four runs in 1.2 innings. Jesen Therrien gave up three in 1.1 innings and Tyler Buckley allowed a run in two innings.

All four BlueClaws runs came in the sixth inning off Daniel Bard, who walked two and hit two of the four batters he faced.

Hickory's Ricardo Rodriguez allowed three hits over five shutout innings to improve to 4-1.

Janluis Castro went 5-6, tying the record for the most hits in a game by a BlueClaws opponent, while adding his first home run. Jairo Beras also hit his first home run and went 3-5 in the win. Ryan Cordell had four hits and scored twice. Every Hickory starter drove in at least one run. The Crawdads, who scored 14 runs on 19 hits, finished one run and one hit off the single game marks for BlueClaws opponents.

JP Crawford, Willians Astudillo, Samuel Hiciano, and Cody Forsythe will represent the BlueClaws in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game on Tuesday in Hickory. The second half begins on Thursday when Lakewood hosts West Virginia.
