
Shorebirds Defeat Captains 3-2

(Salisbury, MD) - Ron Rivas had two RBI's and Lucas Montero scored two runs but it wasn't enough as the Delmarva Shorebirds defeated the Lake County Captains by one run for the second night in a row, this time 3-2. The Shorebirds are now a half game behind the Captains in the Northern Division of the SAL.
The Shorebirds scored twice in the second inning off of Captains starter Ryan Miller. With two outs, Matt Tucker doubled and scored on a double by Kieron Pope. Pope scored as the next batter Victor Castillo singled and it was 2-0. The Captains cut the lead to 2-1 when Shorebirds starter Luis Noel walked the first two batters of the fifth inning. Two batters later, Lucas Montero scored from third on a ground out by Ron Rivas.
The Birds added a run in the sixth inning off of Captains reliever Kyle Landis on a solo home run by Anthony Martinez to up the lead to 3-1. The Captains got to within one run again in top of the seventh inning against Delmarva relief pitcher Shane Mathews on a sacrifice fly by Rivas that scored Montero and the Captains trailed 3-2.
Miller went five innings gave up two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out five and suffered his first loss of the year to drop his record to 7-1. Landis relieved Miller in the sixth inning and pitched two innings allowing one run and Dallas Cawiezell pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Noel picked up the win to go to 6-1 and Mick Mattaliano secured his twelfth save pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
The Captains play the final game of the series with Delmarva on Wednesday at 7:05 PM with the Captains sending RHP Joey Mahalic (2-1, 4.15) to the mound against the Shorebirds LHP Cole McCurry (2-4, 5.47). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM. After Wednesday's game in Delmarva the Captains will play four games in Hagerstown starting Thursday.
The Captains return home to conclude the first half against the same two teams on Monday, June 9th. Monday's game will feature Buck Night at Classic Park with $1 hot dogs, beer, and soda.
