Hagerstown Suns News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Hagerstown Sun (27-29) dropped their sixth straight game, falling to the Lakewood BlueClaws (21-25) on Monday, June 2nd by a score of 8-7.
The Suns got off to a good start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, and after single runs in the bottom of the first and third innings by the BlueClaws, the Suns extended their lead back to three with two runs in the top of the fifth.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the BlueClaws got to Hagerstown starter Cole Kimball (1-2) in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Lakewood a 7-5 lead. The home team sent nine batters to the plate in the inning and amassed four hits and five runs off Kimball, giving the right-hander his second loss of the season.
The Sun did respond by scoring one run in the top of the sixth inning as third baseman Stephen King drove in Michael Burgess to make the score 7-6. King had three hits two RBI and one run scored in the game.
Chris Lugo and Kyle Gunderson were effective in relief for the Suns, combining to pitch four and one third innings and allowing just one run.
The lone run off the Suns bullpen came on a one-out solo home run by Michael Taylor off Gunderson in the bottom of the seventh inning. Taylor's centerfield blast, his ninth home run of the season, proved to be the difference in the game as Tim Pahuta doubled and was driven home by Sean Rooney in the top of the eighth inning, making the score 8-7.
Zach Sterner (3-0) earned the win for Lakewood by pitching two and one third innings in relief of starter Chris Kissock. Kissock lasted four innings and allowed five runs.
Neither team committed an error in the game, though a botched potential double-play in the bottom of the first led to the BlueClaws first run.
The Suns and BlueClaws will play game two of their three game set on Tuesday, June 03 at 7:05 p.m. at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ. The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Ticket packages and sponsorships are available by calling the Suns at 301-791-6266. Visit the Suns on the web at www.hagerstownsuns.com.
