Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Noel Castillo and two relievers combined on a three-hitter and Bradley Suttle slugged his first home run since coming off the disabled list as the Charleston RiverDogs shutout the Rome Braves, 3-0, in an afternoon matinee Tuesday in front of 6,748 fans, most of them school children on Education Day at Joseph R. Riley, Jr. Park.

Charleston won its seventh straight overall and sixth consecutive to begin this eight-game homestand. The RiverDogs, 38-19 on the season, are now 9-1 against last-place Rome this season. Coupled with Asheville's 4-1 loss at Hickory, Charleston is now only 1.5 games behind the first-place Tourists in the Southern Division standings with 12 games remaining in the first half.

Rome drops its sixth straight decision and falls to 18-39.

The shutout was the sixth for the RiverDogs' pitching staff this season, including third in the last five games and fourth in the past seven outings. At one point, Charleston retired 21 of 22 batters faced between the second and ninth innings.

With Castillo's six innings of shutout ball, Charleston's starting pitchers have now surrendered only 23 earned runs over the last 22 games. The RiverDogs staff continues to lower the league's best earned run average, which currently sits at 2.72.

Castillo (6-2) struck out five Braves while issuing a pair of walks. All told, he faced 23 batters and got nine flyouts and four groundouts.

He was relieved in the seventh by Gabe Medina who pitched a pair of frames and recorded two punchouts, while Jonathan Ortiz collected his 17th save with an uneventful 9th inning in which he surrendered one of Rome's three hits.

Suttle, who was activated Sunday from the DL, took Rome starter Jeff Locke (1-7) deep to left center with two outs in the bottom of the first inning to hand the hosts a quick 1-0 lead.

Charleston extended its lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Jesus Montero and Brian Baisley recorded back-to-back singles to left against Locke. After Brandon Laird's fielder's choice that sent Montero to third base, Carmen Angelini cued an RBI single off the outstretched glove of Rome second baseman Cole Miles, which scored Montero.

The RiverDogs posted their third run of the game in the seventh. Austin Krum led off with a single and moved to second on Abraham Almonte's sacrifice bunt. After Krum stole third base, he scored when Justin Snyder flied out to center field for the RBI.

Charleston collected nine hits on the afternoon with Angelini's pair leading the way.

The third of this four-game series is scheduled for a 7:05 pm first pitch Wednesday night. Charleston sends newly-named SAL All-Star right-hander Jason Stephens (2-2, 1.64 ERA), the reigning SAL Pitcher of the Week, to the hill while Rome is expected to counter with lefty Cole Rohrbough (0-1, 6.55 ERA).
