Hagerstown Suns News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Excellent pitching and timely hitting led the Hagerstown Suns (28-29) past the Lakewood BlueClaws (32-26) 5-3, snapping a six-game losing streak for the Suns.
Hagerstown got off to a tough start, allowing two runs on four hits and two errors in the bottom of the first inning, but starting pitcher Brad Meyers battled out of a jam to keep the score 2-0.
The Suns made it 2-1 in the top of the second inning as Michael Burgess scored on an error after doubling to left field, but Lakewood came back with a run in the bottom of the third to retake a two-run lead.
Hagerstown tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the first coming as Tim Pahuta doubled home Dan Lyons. The tying run scored on a two-out error by Lakewood shortstop Dennis Winn after Rooney doubled to right field.
The Suns took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Stephen King walked, and Burgess followed with a swinging strike out on a wild pitch by reliever Joe Rocchio that allowed the Suns rightfielder to reach first base. Rooney then doubled for the second time in the game, driving in both King and Burgess.
Erik Arnesen, Dan Leatherman and Edulin Abreu were excellent out of the bullpen for the Suns. Arnesen (5-1) earned the win with one and one third innings of scoreless work, and Leatherman and Abreu combined to pitch the final two and two thirds without allowing a run. Abreu earned his fourth save of the season.
Rocchio (2-6) took the loss for Lakewood, allowing two runs in one and one third innings of relief.
The game featured five members of the South Atlantic League North All-Star Team. Burgess, Rooney and Bill Rhinehart will all represent Hagerstown while Michael Taylor and Joel Naughton were selected for the BlueClaws.
The Suns and BlueClaws will play the final game of their three game series on Wednesday, June 04 at 7:05 p.m. Drew Naylor, the third member of the BlueClaws selected to the SAL All-Star game, will start for Lakewood against Terrence Engles of the Suns.
