Shootout unkind to Grizzlies

Utah Grizzlies News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - The Grizzlies were on their way to a third straight victory but had to settle for a point as Edmonton scored a late goal and eventually prevailed in a shootout, 2-1. Utah finished their home stand 3-2-0-1 and will now head out for a six-game road trip beginning in Edmonton this weekend.

It was an entertaining first period that Edmonton controlled on the shot board with a 10-6 lead but neither team was able to score. Both David LeNeveu of the Grizzlies and Mike Morrison of the Road Runners showed good form turning aside all the rubber thrown their way in the period.

The same was true for the second period as Edmonton again outshot the Grizzlies 10-8 but both goalies remained strong not allowing a goal through two periods.

Utah finally broke the seal in the third period on an Edmonton turnover as Erik Westrum picked off a pass and blasted a shot by Morrison for his ninth goal of the season tying him for the team lead with Jeff Taffe and Randall Gelech. The goal came at the 1:29 mark of the period and lasted until there was less than four minutes remaining when Edmonton tied the game with a wrist shot by Jamie Wright that hit all kinds of traffic and re-directed by LeNeveu for his 10th goal of the season.

In overtime the Road Runners outshot the Grizzlies six to two but couldn't settle the score sending the game to a shootout where the Road Runners scored with three of their four shooters coming away with the extra point. Martin St. Pierre, Raffi Torres and Brad Winchester scored for Edmonton, while Aaron Gavey scored the only goal for the Grizzlies in the extra frame.

Edmonton outshot the Grizzlies 40-23 in the game as LeNeveu made 38 saves in the games and Morrison stopped 22 shots.

Utah will face Edmonton again on Friday night at the Rexall Place in Alberta with face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM.
