Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â Right wing George Parros registered his first multi-goal game as a pro to the lead the Manchester Monarchs past the Hartford Wolf Pack, 5-2, in front of a crowd of 8,843 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. With the win, their league-leading 33rd of the season, the Monarchs (33-9-3-2, 71 points) moved four points in front of the second place Wolf Pack (32-14-1-2, 67 points) in the American Hockey League's Atlantic Division.
The Monarchs opened the game with a goal from Parros, his sixth of the season, scored from the right circle at 4:24 of the first period. Parros snapped a hard wrist shot past Hartford goaltender Steve Valiquette (30 shots, 26 saves) moments after receiving a pass from center David Steckel. Steckel started the play by stripping Hartford defenseman Bryce Lampman near the blue line.
Hartford tied the game 1:50 later with a power play goal from left wing Alexandre Giroux. He scored his team-leading 20th goal of the season by redirecting a blue line blast from Lampman. Rookie defenseman Thomas Pock also assisted on the play.
The Monarchs regained the lead at 16:37 of the period with their first of three power play goals on the night. Defenseman Joe Rullier, back from a knee injury that caused him to miss a pair of games, found the back of the Harford net when his slap shot from the left point hit a skate a caromed by Valiquette. Left wing Noah Clarke and center Michael Cammalleri shared assists on the second goal of the season for Rullier, scored with the Monarchs holding a 5-on-3 man-advantage. With his assist, Cammalleri, ranked second in the league with 67 points (29-38=67), extended his scoring streak to 10 games (6-11=17).
The Monarchs added to their lead with the second goal of the game for Parros, scored on the power play at 5:10 of the second period when Parros tipped a wrist shot from defenseman Tim Gleason by Valiquette. Left wing Chris Schmidt also assisted on the play.
The Monarchs opened a 4-1 lead by converting on another power play goal at 17:07. The third power play goal went to Clarke, his 15th of the season, and it was triggered from the slot with the Monarchs holding a 5-on-3 man-advantage. Cammalleri picked up his second assist of the night on the play and defenseman Denis Grebeshkov was credited with the second helper.
Hartford threatened to make it a hockey game again with the 17th goal of the season for left wing Chad Wiseman, scored on the power play at 10:52 of the third period.
But Gleason's empty net goal in the closing minute sealed the win. Left wing Dustin Brown assisted on Gleason's seventh goal of the season.
With his 22nd win of the season, goaltender Mathieu Garon (22-8-1) established a near AHL high for wins in a season. He finished with 20 saves. Valiquette (11-8-1) took the loss with 26 saves, and he was pulled from the game after Clarke's goal. His replacement, Jason LaBarbera, stopped all nine of the shots he faced.
The Monarchs finished 3-for-8 on the power play. Hartford was 2-for-4.
