Shipley Stifles 'Topes in Game 1 Win

June 17, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

ALBUQUERQUE - The Reno Aces won the opener of a four-game series at Isotopes Park with a 5-1 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes on Friday night. Sócrates Brito (@SocratesBrito) sparked Reno's offense with his team-best third four-hit game of the season, while right-hander Braden Shipley (@shipley25) turned in another standout performance on the mound.

The former Nevada Wolf Pack star worked eight innings to match his career-long, allowing one earned run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. He threw 91 pitches, 60 for strikes. Shipley now has allowed one run or less on four occasions this season, and his 3.09 ERA ranks fourth in the Pacific Coast League.

Jack Reinheimer (@Reinheimer_08) drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the game. The Aces' shortstop then stole second and advanced to third on Brito's double before Kyle Jensen (@TheKJensen42) drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Carlos Rivero (@Carlos_Rivero3) extended Reno's lead to 2-0 with a solo home run to center field in the second. The dinger was the Venezuela native's eighth of the season, and his sixth away from Greater Nevada Field to tie Jensen for the team lead in road homers.

The Aces put up a crooked number in the third. Tuffy Gosewisch (@SantiaGosewisch) smacked a one-out single and Brito followed with a ground-rule double to right. Jensen then capitalized on another RBI opportunity with a two-base hit to left, his team-leading 20th double of the year to score both runners.

Albuquerque scored its only run in the seventh. Mike Tauchman hit a one-out double to left field to set up Ben Paulsen's RBI single to right, cutting Reno's lead to 4-1. The Aces got the run back to complete the scoring in the eighth. Todd Glaesmann (@ToddGlaesmann22) legged out a two-out single to shortstop and then hustled around to score on Rivero's double to left.

Returning to Albuquerque for the first time since he allowed a season-worst six earned runs on April 21, Shipley faced four batters over the minimum. Entering Friday's play with the second-lowest walk ratio in the PCL (1.31 BB/9.0 IP), the 24-year-old issued no free passes for the sixth time this season.

Mitch Haniger (@M_Hanny19) continued his hot hitting for the Aces, leading off the sixth with a single to extend his overall hitting streak to 11 games. The former Cal Poly Mustang has hit safely in all eight contests since he was promoted to Reno from Double-A Mobile on June 10.

The Aces continue their 12-game road trip with game two at Albuquerque on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. PT. Left-hander Edwin Escobar (3-1, 4.06) will toe the rubber for Reno, while the Isotopes' starter is to be determined.
