Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two innings, which proved to be the difference as the Iowa Cubs (Triple-A Cubs) scored five runs in the sixth through eighth innings before Memphis held on for a 7-6 victory in the series opener Friday night.

The Redbirds (30-35) have now won seven of their last nine games.

Tommy Pham and Michael McKenry each homered for the Redbirds, and Jose Martinez was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Deck McGuire won his fifth-straight game, setting a new career-best stretch. He worked 6.0 innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Sam Tuivailala picked up his eighth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Pham, Martinez, Carlos Peguero, McKenry and Breyvic Valera all reached base three times in the game.

In the last two games, Pham is 4-for-8 with two home runs, three runs scored and seven RBI.

Memphis jumped on Iowa (31-34) starter Aaron Brooks for seven runs in the first two innings, which was crucial as the Cubs chipped away in the late innings. Pham singled and scored on a Martinez hit-and-run double in the first, and Peguero singled home Martinez before a McKenry home run, his first as a Redbird.

Pham provided the big blow in the second with a three-run homer that snuck inside the left-field foul pole, which was his second home run and seventh RBI in his last six at bats.

The Redbirds did not score in their final six at bats while the Cubs started to go to work. Iowa plated two in the sixth in McGuire's final inning of work and two more in the seventh, thanks in part to a throwing error by Valera on a tough play up the middle.

The Cubs got another run off Juan Gonzalez in the eighth, but McKenry threw out the potential tying run trying to steal second to end the inning. Tuivailala came on and set down the Cubs in order to finish the game.

Tomorrow's Memphis-Iowa game is a Beach Party at AutoZone Park at 6:35 p.m. (CT), where the first 1,500 fans receive a Redbirds Beach Towel. Fans also may purchase a Kolten Wong Hawaiian Jersey Theme Ticket, and 10 random jerseys in the allotment have been signed by Wong, and there will also be postgame fireworks set to beach-themed music.

On Sunday at 6:05 p.m., the Redbirds are offering a Father's Day ticket package that includes pregame catch on the field and a barbecue buffet, and the first 1,500 fans receive Cardinals adult socks. The series concludes with an 11:05 a.m. game on Monday.
