Iowa Cubs News Release

MEMPHIS, TN - The Iowa Cubs (31-34) worked back from a 7-1 deficit, but couldn't completely close the gap at they fell to the Memphis Redbirds (30-35) 7-6, Friday night at AutoZone Park.

Aaron Brooks (0-1) took the ball in his second rehab start with Iowa. He was knocked around, allowing seven runs, six earned, through the first two frames. He pitched through the third before exiting and later, was tagged with the loss.

Iowa was first to strike as Memphis starter Deck McGuire walked in a run in the first, but the Redbirds didn't take long to retaliate. The home team quickly jumped ahead with the help of a two-run homer from Michael McKenry and a three-run shot from Tommy Pham.

Both teams were quiet until the sixth when Iowa began its comeback effort. Two runs scored on a double from Munenori Kawasaki and an inning later, two more crossed home as Daniel Vogelbach hit into a fielder's choice with two on that was followed by a throwing error from shortstop Breyvic Valera.

Cael Brockmeyer, making his 2016 Iowa debut, cracked a double to lead off the eighth. He moved to third on a groundout from Kawasaki and was brought home by a pinch-hit sacrifice fly from Jeimer Candelario to pull Iowa within a run, but the offense ended there. Sam Tuivailala took the ninth for Memphis and sat down the I-Cubs in order to secure a Redbirds' win and his eighth save of the season.

Logan Watkins, Kristopher Negrón and Brockmeyer each posted two-hit games, while Kawasaki pitched-in with two RBI.

Iowa and Memphis play game two of the set tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. CT. Tune in to AM 940 or stream the broadcast live at www.iowacubs.com.
