Aces Hammered in Finale at Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - One night after setting a season high for runs scored, the Reno Aces were handed a 9-1 loss from the Las Vegas 51s on Thursday night at Cashman Field. The offense, which totaled 42 hits in the first three games of the four-game set against the 51s, tallied six in the finale to fall two games back of Tacoma for first place in the Pacific Northern Division.
Facing Las Vegas right-hander Logan Verrett - who entered Thursday night's affair with a 4-1 record in five career starts against the Aces spanning the 2014-15 seasons - improved to 5-1 all-time against Reno, despite allowing a career-high five walks.
The 25-year-old limited the Aces (35-31) to two hits over six shutout innings, helping Las Vegas salvage a series split while spoiling Reno's bid at a fourth consecutive series victory.
While Verrett (1-0) dealt, his offense backed him with nine runs of support, four apiece coming in the second and third innings. In the second, the 51s (34-32) sent eight batters to the plate against Aces starter Kyle Drabek (@kyledrabek4). A two-run homer by Travis Taijeron put the home team on top, 2-0, and they never looked back. Dilson Herrera tacked on a two-run double to cap the first of two four-run outbursts.
The 51s doubled their lead to eight with another four runs in the third. Taijeron laced a run-scoring double to make it 5-0, and after a walk, Gavin Cecchini extended the lead to seven with a two-run double of his own. Cecchini later scored on a fielder's choice, narrowly beating a throw home from Aces first baseman, Kyle Jensen.
Las Vegas' Roger Bernadina singled home Eric Campbell in the fourth, pushing the 51s' advantage to nine.
The Aces' offense remained silent until the ninth when they broke the seal against Paul Sewald. Kyle Jensen opened the frame with a single. Following a strikeout, Mitch Haniger (@M_Hanny19) singled to stretch his hitting streak to seven games. Carlos Rivero (@Carlos_Rivero3) then dumped an RBI single into shallow center, providing the final margin.
Reno's bullpen trio of Matt Capps (@MattCapps55), Dominic Leone (@DLeone54) and Silvino Bracho (@silvinobracho) held the 51s to one hit over the final four innings.
Drabek (3-5) suffered the loss after yielding nine runs - eight earned - on 10 hits over four innings. Tuffy Gosewisch (@santiagosewisch) finished 0-for-3 with a walk and two double plays to snap his hitting streak at 11 games.
The Aces continue their 12-game road trip with the opener of a four-game series at Albuquerque on Friday. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. PT from Isotopes Park. Right-hander Braden Shipley (5-3, 3.28) will toe the rubber for Reno, while the Isotopes will send left-hander Harrison Musgrave (3-2, 4.60) to the bump.
