Top Prospect Mejia, World Champ Machi to Join River Cats
June 17, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, CA - The River Cats are expected to add two new names to their roster over the weekend, including San Francisco's number 10 overall prospect and a member of the Giants' 2014 World Championship squad.
Adalberto Mejia joins the River Cats from the Double-A Richmond Squirrels. Signed in 2011 as an international free agent, Mejia has pitched well through his five professional seasons in the Giants organization. So far this year, Mejia owns an immaculate 1.94 ERA in 65 innings of work over 11 games (all starts). He has struck out 58 while walking 16 over that time.
Just over a week ago, Mejia tossed an absolute gem for the Flying Squirrels, throwing seven shutout innings and allowing three hits against the Portland Sea Dogs. Earlier this season, the lefty came one out shy of a complete game, throwing 8.2-shutout innings and striking out a career-best 10 against the Erie SeaWolves on May 30.
For Mejia, his promotion to Sacramento will be his second venture into Triple-A. The left-hander made one start with Triple-A Fresno in 2013, throwing five two-run innings and taking a no-decision.
Also joining the River Cats will be two-time World Champ Jean Machi. Machi played a minor role for the Giants in 2012, pitching in just five games during the regular season. In 2014, however, the right-handed reliever appeared in a career-high 71 games during the regular season, posting a 7-1 record with a 2.58 ERA over 66.1 innings. During the Giants' postseason run, Machi pitched in seven games, including three during the World Series.
Machi pitched in four games for the River Cats as a part of a rehab assignment for a groin injury in June of last season. He last pitched with the Giants in July 2015 before being designated for assignment. He has pitched for the Red Sox and Triple-A Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs) since that time.
Both pitchers are expected to join the team over the weekend with corresponding moves to be announced. The River Cats host the El Paso Chihuahuas starting tonight for a four-game series before welcoming the division-leading Tacoma Rainiers to Raley Field. Tickets are still available for games this weekend and throughout the homestand. For more information, please call 916.371.HITS (4487) or visit rivercats.com.
