Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Back-to-back wild pitches from RHP Carlos Fisher (5-4, 3.55) gifted the Nashville Sounds (41-27) with a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Round Rock Express (36-30) in 10 innings Friday night at First Tennessee Park. Fisher took the loss after giving up the game-winning run after recording just one out.
Sounds RHP Ryan Brasier (4-2, 3.52) collected the victory by virtue of pitching the top of the frame. Brasier struck out one in a perfect 1-2-3 inning of work.
Nashville opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Newly-acquired RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx's first pitch of the frame went awry, striking SS Chad Pinder to put the leadoff man aboard. After stealing second base, Pinder came around to score on a single from LF Colin Walsh three batters later.
In the fifth, Bibens-Dirkx allowed a one-out double to CF Jaycob Brugman and a single to 2B Arismendy Alcantara before Express manager Jason Wood elected to go to the bullpen. RHP Justin DeFratus then entered the contest, allowing a long sacrifice fly that served to send Brugman home. The run closed the book on Bibens-Dirkx, who finished having allowed two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work. The righty also struck out nine batters in what was his first Triple-A start since May 1, 2015.
Round Rock jumped ahead in the sixth inning with a flurry of timely base hits. C Brett Nicholas opened the frame with a single then came around to score as RF Jared Hoying lined a stand-up triple deep into right field. A single off the bat of DH Drew Robinson allowed Hoying to trot home, tying the game at two while extending Robinson's hitting streak to eight consecutive games. Another single, this one courtesy of 3B Pedro Ciriaco, moved Robinson to third and chased starter RHP Chris Smith from the contest.
With RHP Eduard Santos on in relief, LF James Jones poked a sacrifice fly deep into center field, leaving Robinson just enough time to tag and score from third, giving the Express their first advantage of the night at 3-2. The potential for a big inning came grinding to a halt as Ciriaco was caught trying to steal second base just minutes before 1B Edwin Garcia struck out.
Round Rock's lead was short lived as Nashville jumped back in front in the bottom of the inning thanks in part to a critical error by DeFratus. DH Ryon Healy kicked thing off with a leadoff single. After Walsh popped out, 1B Rangel Ravelo grounded a picture perfect double play ball right back to DeFratus. However, the pitcher threw the relay wide of second base and into center field. The mistake proved to be a costly one as RF Matt Olson singled to load the bases. A seven pitch walk to C Matt McBride tied the contest before a Brugman sacrifice fly gave the Sounds a 4-3 advantage.
A strange play in the visitors half of the seventh inning knotted the game once again. 2B Doug Bernier opened the frame with a walk, then CF Delino DeShields followed up with a single. After a Hanser Alberto sacrifice bunt that moved both runners ahead, the Sounds opted to intentionally walk Nicholas to load the bases. Hoying then stepped to the plate and slapped a high fly ball to center field. Despite being camped underneath the offering, Brugman dropped the ball on contact, allowing Bernier to race home. However, with what looked to be a sure-fire out, no other baserunners attempted to advance. Brugman relayed the ball to 3B Renato Nunez at third, who stepped on the bag to record the force out with DeShields still standing at second. A Robinson strikeout then ended the frame.
Following a pair of scoreless innings from both teams, Fisher emerged from the Express bullpen to take over in the 10th. After striking out Healy, Fisher surrendered a double to Walsh. The left fielder suffered an apparent leg injury rounding first and was replaced at second base by pinch runner Joey Wendle. After building a 2-2 count on Ravelo, Fisher's first wild pitch skipped over the batter's box, off Nicholas' chest protector, and into foul territory on the third base side, allowing Wendle move 90 feet closer to home.
Just moments later, Fisher's second wild pitch in as many throws sailed past Nicholas and all the way to the backstop behind home plate. The catcher had no chance to make a play as Wendle cruised home to give the Sounds a big 5-4 walk-off win. The victory pushes Nashville to four games ahead of Round Rock in the divisional standings.
The top two teams in the Southern Division of the American Conference continue their crucial mid-season series on Saturday evening. RHP Kyle Lohse (2-3, 5.35) is scheduled to toe the rubber for the E-Train while the Sounds plan to counter with rehabbing RHP Henderson Alvarez (1-0, 3.45). First pitch at First Tennessee Park is set for 7:05 p.m. Round Rock will return home on Saturday, June 25 to face the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
