Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Despite a strong start from one of the top prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox suffered a 5-2 loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers in their series opener on Friday night at Security Service Field.
In the first inning of his Sky Sox home debut, Josh Hader (0-2, 3.00), got some help from his defense to get through the frame. After Irving Falu drew a leadoff walk, Ramon Torres hit a fly ball to right field. After making the catch, right fielder Andy Wilkins fired back to first base to double off Falu, who was off the bag. Hader then struck out Hunter Dozier looking to end the inning.
In the bottom half, the Sky Sox scored first off Omaha starter Jonathan Dziedzic (2-6, 4.96). Michael Reed walked, and then Orlando Arcia doubled to put runners on second and third. Wilkins drove in Reed with the game's first run on a ground out to put the Sky Sox ahead.
The Storm Chasers tied the game at one in the third when Torres singled to right to score Orlando Calixte from second.
Hader got ground ball double plays in both the fourth and fifth innings to escape unscathed. In the sixth, he again ran into trouble, and Omaha was able to take advantage and grab the lead. Torres led off the inning with a double, then scored on a ground-rule double from Jorge Bonifacio to give the Storm Chasers the 2-1 lead. It would have grown, if not for a stellar throw from Sky Sox catcher Rene Garcia to gun down a runner trying to steal second. Hader ended his night with a strikeout of Traivs Snider.
In another quality start, Hader pitched six innings for the Sky Sox, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six.
Omaha scored a pair of runs against Sky Sox reliever Drew Gagnon in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead, but the Sky Sox were quick to respond.
In the bottom half, Dziedzic was pulled from the game for reliever Joe Beimel with runners on base. With two outs, Yadiel Rivera singled off him to score Will Middlebrooks from third and cut the Sky Sox deficit to 4-2.
For Omaha, Dziedzic pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.
In the eighth, Gagnon got into a jam, but Michael Kirkman came in and induced an inning ending ground out to keep the deficit at two.
Andrew Edwards pitched a scoreless eighth for Omaha to keep his team ahead by a pair.
Omaha added another run in the ninth, and then Kevin McCarthy came in during the ninth inning and finished off the game to earn his first save of the season.
The series between Colorado Springs and Omaha continues tomorrow night with a 6:05 p.m. matchup at Security Service Field. Brent Suter (1-3, 3.90) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Sky Sox against Christian Binford (1-4, 5.11).
