Sharks get two points after firing 114 shots in three games

Rewind the Tape:

11.5.08 - Worcester 3 - Portland 5 - DCU Center

Rookie Nathan Gerbe recorded a hat trick and Marc Mancari scored twice to lead the Pirates 5-3 over the Sharks in Worcester in game one of the Unum Cup Challenge. Tom Cavanagh scored in his third straight game while Mike Morris and Steven Zalewski also lit the lamp for the Sharks. Ryan Vesce added two assists and Thomas Greiss made 20 saves in net for Worcester.

11.7.08 - Worcester 4 - Hartford 3 - XL Center

Tom Cavanagh was named the game's #1 star scoring two power play goals in a four goal second period as the Sharks remained perfect against the Wolf Pack this season (3-0-0-0) on Friday night. The Sharks trailed 1-0 after twenty minutes of play but exploded for four 2nd period goals as Derek Joslin and Andrew Desjardins recorded the other tallies. Kyle Jones recorded his first professional victory in his first professional start making 17 saves in net while the Sharks outshot the Wolf Pack 32-20.

11.8.08 - Worcester 4 - Binghamton 5 - Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena

The Sharks trailed 5-0 after just 24:23 minutes of play after allowing four power play goals but fought to the finish in a 5-4 loss to Binghamton on Saturday night. Riley Armstrong recorded two goals and an assist on his 24th birthday while Lukas Kaspar and Cory Larose each found the back of the net. The game featured four fights, 73 shots, nine goals, and seven power play goals. Worcester out shot the Senators 52-21 including a 24-5 advantage in the third period. Binghamton net minder Brian Elliot made a career high 48 saves in net. Kyle Jones received his first professional loss for Worcester allowing five goals on 16 shots through two periods before Gerald Coleman took over at the start of the third.

Sharks in the Atlantic...

The Sharks (5-6-0-0) swim in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with ten points, nine points behind the first place Portland Pirates.

Shark Bites:

*Tom Cavanagh had a season high four game goal streak (6-2-8) snapped in Binghamton on Saturday and leads the team with four power play goals.

*The Sharks have 17 fighting major penalties this season through eleven games. Six different players have dropped the gloves already this season (Frazer McLaren (7), Westgarth (6), Moore, Demers, Cavanagh, and McGinn).

*The Sharks have allowed four shorthanded goals in the first eleven games this season (allowed just 7 in 80 games last season).

*Worcester has outshot its opponents in all eleven games, and has only been outshot in 6 of 33 total periods this season.

*The Sharks recorded a season high 52 shots in Binghamton on Saturday.

*Ryan Vesce leads the team with six power play assists.

*Derek Joslin leads all Sharks with 39 shots on goal.

Roster Moves:

*The Worcester Sharks signed goaltender Gerald Coleman to a PTO on Thursday. The 23-year-old Coleman played in five games with Phoenix (ECHL) this season recording a 2-1-1 record with a 1.48gaa and a .950 save percentage. Entering his fourth professional season, the former Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick in 2003 has played in the AHL with Portland and Springfield and the ECHL in Augusta and Johnstown. Coleman has appeared in two NHL contests playing in 43 minutes for the Tampa Bay Lighting recording a 0-0-1 record with a 2.77gaa and a .882 save percentage in the 2005-06 season.

*The San Jose Sharks recalled forward Brad Staubitz and goaltender Thomas Greiss and reassigned forward Jamie McGinn to Worcester on Thursday.

Greiss had a 4-5-0 record with Worcester this season, posting a 3.22 goals-against average and an .860 save percentage. Staubitz had played in two games with Worcester this season, posting six penalty minutes. He made his NHL debut this season on Oct. 17 at Anaheim. In three games with San Jose, he has no points.

McGinn made his NHL debut with the Sharks on Oct. 28 against Pittsburgh. In his second NHL game, he scored two points (1-1=2) against the Detroit Red Wings and scored the game-winning goal on Nov. 4 vs. Minnesota. In five games, he has three points (2-1=3). In six games with Worcester, McGinn tied for the team lead in points (4-1=5) and was first on the team in goals at the time of his recall.

Worcester to host the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications!

The Sharks and the city of Worcester will host the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications on January 25th and 26th at the DCU Center. Tickets are on sale to the general public now. The 2009 event in Worcester will mark the fourth time since it was revived in 1995 that the AHL All-Star Classic will take place in New England. The AHL All-Star Classic was last held in Massachusetts in 1959 at the Eastern States Coliseum in West Springfield.

Coming Up:

The Sharks return to Worcester for a Veteran's Day matinee at the DCU Center on Tuesday. Fans are encouraged to bring a canned food item to donate in exchange for a ticket voucher good for a future Sharks home game, and are also invited to lace up their skates and take part in a post-game skate with the team. The entire Family Day event is made possible by Price Chopper.

Worcester will then travel to Providence on Friday before returning home to the DCU Center to host the Falcons on Saturday. Jason Earles from the hit television show "Hannah Montana" will sign autographs at the game which starts at 7:05p.m. The Sharks wrap up the busy week with a 4:00 p.m. start in Springfield on Sunday.
