Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks have assigned rookie goaltender Nolan Schaefer to the Fresno Falcons. The fifth round draft pick (166th overall) of the Sharks in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft becomes the first player sent to Fresno under the two clubs' affiliation agreement.

Schaefer joins the Falcons after having just completed a stellar playing career at Providence College (RI). Named Second Team All-American following his sophomore season in 2001, he posted better than a 90% save percentage during each of his four years in uniform and left Providence as the school's all-time leader in saves (2,848) and goals against average (2.98).

"Nolan is a top notch goaltender with a strong work ethic, who factors into the future plans of the Sharks," said Falcons Head Coach and General Manager Blaine Moore. "We're not sure how long he'll be here, but he was sent to Fresno to play games, and we're happy to have him."

In addition to adding Schaefer, the Falcons also released defenseman Chris Lane and forward Kieran Porter from the team's training camp roster, giving the club 23 available players for tomorrow night's pre-season game against the Long Beach Ice Dogs.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. tilt at Gateway Ice Center go on sale at the door at 6 p.m. tomorrow and cost $2 for 2003-04 Falcons season ticket holders and $5 for the general public. Fresno will then travel to Long Beach's practice facility, Glacial Gardens in Lakewood, CA, for a second pre-season game against the Ice Dogs at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oc.t. 11.
