Underhill re-signs for second season
October 9, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release
FLORENCE, SC â The Florence Pride, proud members of the ECHL, announced today the re-signing of goaltender Matt Underhill. The 24-year-old Underhill was named to the Southern Conference All-Star Team last year in his rookie season. In 33 games with the Pride, Underhill posted a 16-13-2 record, a .907 save percentage and a 2.81 goals against average, which was good enough for 13th in the league. He was recalled to the American Hockey League by the Providence Bruins on two different occasions, appearing in seven games, and finishing 3-3-1 with a .901 save percentage and a goals against average of 3.08.
Prior to re-signing with the Pride, Underhill attended the camps of the Los Angeles Kings, and their AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. He was selected by the Calgary Flames in the sixth round, 170th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Underhill had four standout seasons at Cornell University, posting a goals against average under 2 in both his junior and senior seasons. He was named First-Team All-American goaltender following his senior season. This season, he will be reunited with his former Big Red teammate, defenseman Mark McRae, who signed with Florence earlier this summer.
"Matt Underhill had an excellent season last year and earned the right to participate in an NHL camp," Pride Head Coach Perry Florio said. "His determination, coupled with his talent, will earn him another shot this year. Matt is too good and works too hard to be in the ECHL very long."
The Pride open their 2003-2004 season tomorrow night, traveling to Columbia for a pre-season contest. Saturday night, the Pride will host the Inferno at the Lion's Den at 7:30 in the lone home pre-season game. Tickets are available at the Florence Civic Center Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets, by phone at (843) 679-9333 or on-line at www.ticketmaster.com. Florence opens the regular season next Friday, playing at Columbia at 7:30 p.m. The home opener is Saturday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m., also against the Inferno. The 1,000 fans through the doors will receive free Cheer Sticks, courtesy of Carolina Custom Truck Accessories. The Pride are also home on Sunday afternoon, hosting Florida at 2:30. Kids 12 and under can purchase tickets for just $2.50 for all Sunday home games this season, and kids meals are also available for $2.50.
